  • THE FLAPJACK OCTOPUS Do Your Kids Know This?: A Children's Picture Book

    Tanya Turner

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 3, 2017)
If most species of octopus are quite scary, consider this one an exception. The Flapjack Octopus is far from being scary – it’s harmless and it’s cute. The Flapjack Octopus is a species of octopus that’s also called Flapjack Devilfish. However, it only looks similar to a devilfish, but it is not related to it. Because of its flat appearance, it’s referred to as Flapjack or Pancake Devilfish. Being flat also makes it the most compressed (or flat) species of cephalopod (octopuses and squids are members of this group or class). The body of a Flapjack Octopus is gelatin-like, so it’s soft and gooey. The shades of their body can be anywhere from transparent to dark red – so there’s a pinkish shade there somewhere, too. As with all octopuses, the Flapjack Octopus also has eight legs (octo actually means eight). Their legs are joined together by a thin flesh, so their legs are webbed. Having webbed legs also makes the octopus seem like an open umbrella when it’s moving. Excited to learn more about the Flapjack Octopus? • THE SPIDER TORTOISE Do Your Kids Know This?: A Children's Picture Book

    Tanya Turner

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 14, 2017)
What is a Spider Tortoise? Is it a species of a spider or of a tortoise? Don’t let its name confuse you – the Spider Tortoise is not related to spiders. It’s a tortoise, a close relative of turtles (they look very much alike). It’s called the Spider Tortoise because it has a pattern on its shell that looks like spider webs. Typically, they have designs of yellow lines radiating out from the center. Since the main background of their shells is dark brown or black, the spider web pattern really stands out. As with other tortoises (and turtles, too) they have shells on their undersides (their belly part). This part of the Spider Tortoise is colored yellow. Spider Tortoises have tails, too. Note, however, that the tails of the males are longer and thicker than the tails of females. Also, the tails of males have harder tips than those of the females. • THE HISPANIOLAN SOLENODON Do Your Kids Know This?: A Children's Picture Book

    Tanya Turner

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, April 20, 2017)
Have you heard of an animal called the Hispaniolan Solenodon? Isn’t a long name for an animal? The Hispaniolan Solenodon is also called the Dominican Solenodon. It’s a species of solenodon which looks very similar to shrews, but although both solenodons and shrews look like rats, they are not related to rats at all because they are not rodents. Since this species of animal is only found on the island of Hispaniola, it’s been named the Hispaniolan Solenodon. An adult Hispaniolan Solenodon measures about 19 to 28 inches – but this measurement includes its tail. Like rats, they also have long tails, which can measure about eight to ten inches. Their bodies are therefore almost as long as their tails. A fully grown adult Hispaniolan Solenodon can be quite heavy. It can weigh about two pounds – an adult person can easily carry it, but a child will have some trouble carrying such weight. Excited to learn more about the Hispaniolan Solenodon? • Perfect Partners

    John Woodward

Library Binding (Heinemann, Feb. 9, 2004)

Perfect Partners looks at how different species come together and take what they need from each other, often forming partnerships for life. Many plants need animal partners for pollination and to spread their seeds.
