  • Ernst Haeckel: Art Forms in Nature Coloring Book

    Ernst Haeckel

    Hardcover (Pomegranate, Jan. 21, 2016)
Kunstformen der Natur, or Art Forms in Nature, encapsulates biologist Ernst Haeckel’s response to Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. Haeckel (German, 1834–1919) published these exquisitely rendered depictions of flora and fauna in ten installments of ten illustrations from 1899 to 1904, aiming to widen the general public’s understanding of naturalism. Haeckel also clearly saw his illustrations as more than just scientific documentation: in introducing one of his plates, he wrote that its patterns would not be out of place in embroideries or on urns and bottles. Haeckel’s elaborate forms have been called a precursor to art nouveau, and his influence even stretched to architecture. These illustrations derive from a copy of Kunstformen der Natur in the Case Book Collection in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. The Library holds over 160 million items in almost all media and in more than 470 languages.

  • Charley Harper Coloring Book, Vol. 2

    Charley Harper

    Paperback (Pomegranate, July 12, 2014)
Soft cover book with staple binding.48 pages with 22 images to colorSize: 8½ x 11 in.Coloring pages are blank on the back so they can be cut out and displayed. An avid naturalist, Charley Harper enjoyed painting the insects, plants, birds, and animals he loved. He masterfully portrayed a host of species using simple lines and shapes. From the smallest lady beetle to the largest monkey, Harper conveyed not only the form and coloration of his subjects but also their personality. His minimalist approach did not reduce the impact of his art; instead, it offered a bold and unique interpretation of the world around him.Born in rural West Virginia, Harper (1922 2007) was always drawn to nature; as a boy he would traipse across the local hills, sketchbook in hand, stopping to draw whatever seized his attention. Studies at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Art Students League of New York led him to his unmistakable style, refined during his long and noteworthy art career spent largely in Ohio. Several creatures in this coloring book are from the 1991 poster he created for the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes (Cleveland), in celebration of the area s wildlife and the Nature Center s many years of serendipity in the suburbs. Inside are twenty-two pages of Harper s playful critters, with reproductions of his full-color illustrations on the inside of the front and back covers. We ve also included a blank page at the end so you, like Harper, can sketch the world around you.

  • Charley Harper Sketchbook: How to Draw 28 Birds in Harper's Style

    Pomegranate Communications Inc., Charley Harper

    Spiral-bound (Pomegranate, May 1, 2013)
This step-by-step visual guide to drawing twenty-eight birds as portrayed by artist Charley Harper progresses from simple to complex images, from cardinals through owls to a roadrunner. An avid naturalist, Charley Harper particularly liked to paint birds. He masterfully portrayed a host of species using simple lines and shapes. From the smallest songbird to the largest seabird, Harper conveyed not only the form and coloration of his avian subjects but also their personalities. His minimalist approach did not reduce the impact of his art; instead, it offered a bold and unique interpretation of nature s winged beauties. This sketchbook gives you the opportunity to learn how Harper captured his subjects with the fewest possible visual elements. For each of the twenty-eight birds featured herein, we ve included a four-page presentation. On the first page, you will find line drawings that show a three-stage process for recreating Harper s image. The line drawings build on each other: the first one presents the most basic shapes, the second further develops the form of the bird, and the third com-pletes the image with all the details. Following the line drawings are two uncoated sheets on which you can mimic these lines and shapes. Harper s original full-color bird image completes each sequence. The sketchbook progresses from the simpler of Harper s bird images to the more complex. In some cases, the line drawings present a slightly modified version of the original art. At the end of this book, you will find thirty pages for your continued sketching, be it using Harper s style or your own bold and unique approach. Happy bird sketching!
