  • Home Reading Log

    Eleanor Ash

Paperback (Fallen Leaves Publishing, Nov. 1, 2019)
Teach your child to comprehend at the same time as they learn to read. “Home Reading”As a mom those two little words are enough to make me shudder. As a mom with many kids, they make me want to cry. As a parent you grin and get through it. You read. You correct the words with kindness and patience. And you smile supportively when you hear “L-i-t-t-l-e, I don’t know.... balloon?” hundreds of times. You get through it. Or so you think. Then, grade three smashes through your routine. All of a sudden the kids need to be “comprehending” what they are reading. It’s not about learning “how to read” anymore it’s all about “reading to learn.” And you ask yourself – isn’t this something that could have happened at the SAME TIME as learning to read? The short answer is yes. Yes it can happen at the same time (and it should be happening at the same time). This guide will help you help your child learn these skills TOGETHER – meaning you spend less time reading about people and their pets sitting in strange places, and more time doing things you actually love with your family (without feeling guilty for sacrificing their academic future!) If your child is already reading chapter books, great! Encourage them to fill out a page after each chapter. Possibly the best thing about this resource is, after a while, your kids will be thinking of the questions as they read. You teach them once, they continue to use the skill as they learn and grow. This book has both reading/writing prompts as well as drawing prompts. Some children do both, others only engage with one. You know your child best. Enjoy!

  • Happy Henry's Adventures In Slothville: Part One

    Sloan Love

eBook (Long Leaf Publishing, Sept. 12, 2017)
The Everson family was supposed to have a good summer vacation, one that would help Bill and Connie's dull marriage, bring sullen rebellious sixteen-year-old Jeff out of his shell, and give ten-year-old Gennie some warm memories. Instead, they got lost and found themselves in Slothville, a weird little town founded by escaped circus refugees led by a desperado clown that was either a hero or bandit... depending on who you ask. So they were only supposed to be there one night, just long enough to get some rest at The Last Resort Motel, but like John Lennon said, LIFE is what happens when you are busy making other plans, and the Eversons certainly did not plan on the kids falling into an adventure with a strange (literally) underground secret society, and Slothville's very own scientist Feldon Norris did not plan on accidentally causing his friend Happy Henry's body to be switched with a crazy clown-faced pirate from the past! But that's just what happened, and now the race is on to find the All-Being before the bad guys do, and also... just to figure this whole thing out....But time is ticking, and things are rarely as they seem when it comes to Slothville...

The next time your child asks “Where do I start?” you can tell them to turn to page one! This book was designed with children in grades 1-6 in mind.
