The Singer/Random House Literature Series balanced program for developing appreciation of literature. Throughout the series a recognizable balance is maintained among fiction, biography, drama, poetry, and essays as well as among mystery, adventure, fantasy, fact, and real-life experiences. Appreciation is built through a program of understanding, interpretation, and evaluation. Selections are designed to evoke appreciations both for the differing literary forms and for the skill of the writer within the form. Illustrations complement the selections in the way that the best of children's literature has always been enhanced by fine art. The literary selections thoroughout the series represent well, and promote positive attitudes toward, all races, cultures, and creeds. Specially designed creative dramatics material has been developed to promote intercultural understanding of a high order. The editors have worked extensively with teachers in the elementary school. The program in The Singer/Random House Literature Series was developed though this kind of reasoned judgment and field work.
