Good, The seminal and first in the series of Just William books, this an early Impression published 1950. 38th Impression 251pp. Frontispiece, charming and profuse illustrations by the wonderful Thomas Henry. Internally very good clean tight sound square, well held in joints and hinges, no bookplate, inscriptions or marks of any kind. In original black lettered and illustrated red cloth boards featuring vignette of William to bowed and slightly spot faded upper (hence reduced in price). Also original unclipped (6') colour pictorial wrapper gently faded near upper joint and slightly chipped not intruding or detracting. The William stories centre around the mischievous 11-year-old schoolboy and his band of friends, known as "The Outlaws", puzzled onlookers of society's mores. who almost always emerge triumphant. According to the actor John Teed, whose family lived next door to Crompton, the model for William was Crompton's nephew Tommy. "I used to play with her nephew. He used to get up to all sorts of tricks and he was always presumed to be the inspiration by all of us." A nostalgic delight.
