Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy by William Shakespeare thought to have been written in 1598 and 1599, as Shakespeare was approaching the middle of his career. The play was included in the First Folio, published in 1623. By means of "noting" (which, in Shakespeare's day, sounded similar to "nothing" as in the play's title,[1][2] and which means gossip, rumour, and overhearing), Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into confessing their love for each other, and Claudio is tricked into rejecting Hero at the altar on the erroneous belief that she has been unfaithful. At the end, Benedick and Beatrice join forces to set things right, and the others join in a dance celebrating the marriages of the two couples. The earliest printed text states that Much Ado About Nothing was "sundry times publicly acted" prior to 1600 and it is likely that the play made its debut in the autumn or winter of 1598-1599.[8] The earliest recorded performances are two that were given at Court in the winter of 1612-1613, during the festivities preceding the marriage of Princess Elizabeth with Frederick V, Elector Palatine (14 February 1613). The play was published in quarto in 1600 by the stationers Andrew Wise and William Aspley. This was the only edition prior to the First Folio in 1

  • Much ADO about Nothing

    William Shakespeare

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Sept. 19, 2018)
Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare's great comedies - a love story that takes place during Medieval times. The protagonist is Count Claudio, who has returned victorious from war and falls instantly in love with Hero, the daughter of his friend. But as Shakespeare famously said in A Midsummer Night's Dream, "the course of true love never did run true." The play features several hilarious episodes as Claudio and Hero try to make it to the altar, alongside the subplot about a second pairing, who stubbornly swear off love entirely, vowing to never marry. The story follows the friends and family of the two couples, as they conspire to put them together. The edition is published with an introductory essay by William Watkiss Lloyd, an English writer and scholar. Lloyd contends that Much Ado About Nothing was originally written in blank verse, and that this edition is "now first published in fully recovered metrical form." Lloyd clearly knows his subject, but his style could be said to be overly complicated and of course the real star of the edition is obviously the play itself. Much Ado About Nothing is beloved because it established romantic comedy elements that are still seen today in movies, plays and television. There are classic tropes at work here, like the love-at-first-sight couple who meet cute, or the sparring couple who hate each other but may actually be meant for each other. Shakespeare's mastery of language is on full display, as the text is packed with innuendos, double entendres and puns. Much Ado About Nothing was written as Shakespeare was approaching the middle of his career, and he was at the height of his powers. The play is first and foremost entertaining and its characters and machinations will be recognizable to modern audiences. If you are a fan of Shakespeare or a lover of romantic comedies, then you must read Much Ado About Nothing. Paperback (Independently published, Aug. 14, 2017)
The action is set in Sicily, where Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon, has recently defeated his half-brother, the bastard Don John, in a military engagement. Apparently reconciled, they return to the capital, Messina, as guests of the Governor, Leonato. There Count Claudio, a young nobleman serving in Don Pedro's army, falls in love with Hero, Leonato's daughter, whom Don Pedro woos on his behalf. The play's central plot shows how Don John maliciously deceives Claudio into believing that Hero has taken a lover on the eve of her marriage, causing Claudio to repudiate her publicly, at the altar.
