  • Hans Brinker; or, The silver skates

    Mary Mapes Dodge

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

  • Hans Brinker: The Silver Skates

    Mary Mapes Dodge

Paperback (Independently published, July 26, 2020)
On a bright December morning long ago, two thinly clad children were kneeling upon the bank of a frozen canal in Holland. The sun had not yet appeared, but the gray sky was parted near the horizon, and its edges shone crimson with the coming day. Most of the good Hollanders were enjoying a placid morning nap. Even Mynheer von Stoppelnoze, that worthy old Dutchman, was still slumbering “in beautiful repose”.Now and then some peasant woman, poising a well-filled basket upon her head, came skimming over the glassy surface of the canal; or a lusty boy, skating to his day’s work in the town, cast a good-natured grimace toward the shivering pair as he flew along.Meanwhile, with many a vigorous puff and pull, the brother and sister, for such they were, seemed to be fastening something to their feet—not skates, certainly, but clumsy pieces of wood narrowed and smoothed at their lower edge, and pierced with holes, through which were threaded strings of rawhide. These queer-looking affairs had been made by the boy Hans. His mother was a poor peasant woman, too poor even to think of such a thing as buying skates for her little ones. Rough as these were, they had afforded the children many a happy hour upon the ice. And now, as with cold, red fingers our young Hollanders tugged at the strings—their solemn faces bending closely over their knees—no vision of impossible iron runners came to dull the satisfaction glowing within.

  • St. Nicholas, Vol. 24: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks; Part I., November, 1896, to April, 1897

    Mary Mapes Dodge

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Jan. 19, 2018)
Excerpt from St. Nicholas, Vol. 24: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks; Part I., November, 1896, to April, 1897There was an unwonted buzzing in the east end of Stratford on that next to the last day Of April, 1596. It was as if some one had thrust a stick into a hive of bees and they had come whirling out to see.The low stone guard-wall Of Old Clopton bridge, built a hundred years before by rich Sir Hugh, sometime Mayor Of London, was lined with straddling boys like strawberries upon a Spear of grass, and along the low causeway from the west across the lowland to the town, brown faced, barefoot youngsters sat beside the road way with their chubby legs a-dangle down the mossy stones, staring away into the south across the grassy levels Of the valley Of the Stour.Punts were poling slowly up the Avon to the bridge; and at the outlets Of the town where the streets came down to the waterside among the weeds, little knots Of men and serving maids stood looking into the south and listening.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, March 25, 2015)
Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.
