“Turning Daylight” is a 1910 novel by Jack London. John Griffith London (1876 – 1916), commonly known as Jack London, was an American journalist, social activist, and novelist. He was an early pioneer of commercial magazine fiction, becoming one of the first globally-famous celebrity writers who were able to earn a large amount of money from their writing. London is famous for his contributions to early science fiction and also notably belonged to "The Crowd", a literary group an Francisco known for its radical members and ideas. “Turning Daylight” was among the best-selling books of the year it was published, as well as London's best-selling book during his lifetime. The story takes place in the Yukon Territory in 1893 and follows a man who became the most successful entrepreneur during the Alaskan Gold Rush. He then goes on to move to California, where he takes other kind of chances and is soon worth millions of dollars. Life seems good for him as the years go by and he soon falls in love with his secretary. But she rejects him over and over again. How this all plays out is the stuff of legend. It takes place in a time and a place when men took huge risks, both with body and soul. And it introduces a woman who, actually, can relate to the modern women of today.
