  • The Trial

Franz Kafka, Todd McLaren, Tantor Audio

First published in 1925, The Trial tells the story of a man arrested for an unknown crime by a remote, inaccessible authority and his struggle for control over the increasing absurdity of his life. One of Franz Kafka's best-known works, The Trial has been variously interpreted as an examination of political power, a satirical depiction of bureaucracy, and a pessimistic religious parable. Left unfinished at the time of Kafka's 1924 death, The Trial is nevertheless a trenchant depiction of the seemingly incomprehensible nature of existence and a fascinating exploration of the universal issues of justice, power, freedom, and isolation.

Audio CD (Blackstone Pub, Jan. 14, 2020)
The Trial is one of the great works of the twentieth century—an extraordinary vision of a man put on trial by an anonymous authority on an unspecified charge.Josef K., thirty, lives in a large town in an unspecified country when he is summoned to answer a charge and appear in the courtroom for his trial. Franz Kafka evokes all the realities of trial without any of the specifics in a society that seems to have degraded into chaos: a squalid environment, rats, and yellow liquid shooting out of a hole in the wall. Guards, claustrophobia, anxiety—The Trial is a gripping story and an allegory of modern life that remains just as relevant a century after it was written.

    Franz Kafka

Paperback (Empire Books, Nov. 25, 2011)
Joseph K. is suddenly arrested for an unknown and unexplained crime. Despite his apparent willingness to comply with the mysterious proceedings of The Trial, K. receives no leniency and no explanation as the trap of anonymous authority closes around him. Franz Kafka’s novel explores the plight of man under the authority of the faceless bureaucracy, the extension of a society which has become unconcerned with the rights or even the circumstances of the individual. Kafka’s ability to communicate realistic dread in fantastical situations is fully realized in this haunting work.

Franz Kafka, George Guidall, Recorded Books

Audiobook (Recorded Books, July 1, 2005)
If Max Brod had obeyed Franz Kafka's dying request, Kafka's unpublished manuscripts would have been burned, unread. Fortunately, Brod ignored his friend's wishes and published The Trial, which became the author's most famous work. Now Kafka's enigmatic novel regains its humor and stylistic elegance in a new translation based on the restored original manuscript. Thirty-year-old Josef K., a financial officer in a European city bank, is suddenly arrested. He is subjected to hearings, questioning, and visits from officials. Defending his innocence against charges that are never explained to him, he watches his life dissolve into absurdity. Whether read as an existential tale or a parable, this haunting story stands out as one of the great novels of our time. Breon Mitchell, a professor of Germanic Studies and Comparative Literature at Indiana University, has received national awards for his literary translations. The renewed energy and power of this classic work are complemented by veteran narrator George Guidall's superb performance.

Mr Franz Kafka, Mr David Wyllie

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, April 3, 1825)
Arrest - Conversation with Mrs. Grubach - Then Miss BĂĽrstner Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was arrested. Every day at eight in the morning he was brought his breakfast by Mrs. Grubach's cook - Mrs. Grubach was his landlady - but today she didn't come. That had never happened before. K. waited a little while, looked from his pillow at the old woman who lived opposite and who was watching him with an inquisitiveness quite unusual for her, and finally, both hungry and disconcerted, rang the bell. There was immediately a knock at the door and a man entered. He had never seen the man in this house before. He was slim but firmly built, his clothes were black and close-fitting, with many folds and pockets, buckles and buttons and a belt, all of which gave the impression of being very practical but without making it very clear what they were actually for. "Who are you?" asked K., sitting half upright in his bed.

    Franz Kafka

Paperback (Iboo Press House, May 20, 2020)
The Trial (original German title: Der Process, later Der ProceĂź, Der ProzeĂź and Der Prozess) is a novel written by Franz Kafka between 1914 and 1915 and published posthumously in 1925. One of his best-known works, it tells the story of Josef K., a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime revealed neither to him nor to the reader. Heavily influenced by Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, Kafka even went so far as to call Dostoyevsky a blood relative. Like Kafka's other novels, The Trial was never completed, although it does include a chapter which appears to bring the story to an intentionally abrupt ending. After Kafka's death in 1924 his friend and literary executor Max Brod edited the text for publication by Verlag Die Schmiede. The original manuscript is held at the Museum of Modern Literature, Marbach am Neckar, Germany. The first English-language translation, by Willa and Edwin Muir, was published in 1937. In 1999, the book was listed in Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century and as No. 2 of the Best German Novels of the Twentieth Century.iBoo Press House uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work.
