The Iliad of Homer – An Ancient Tale Made Available to the Modern WorldRichard Lattimore's famous translation of Homer's Iliad is among the greatest works depicting early Greek literature available today. This remarkable tale of adventure that has survived throughout the centuries can be considered one of the most powerful and impressive works of literary art ever made.If you want to get as close to the original Greek version of Homer's Iliad, there is no substitute for the work of Lattimore and Richard Martin, the two experts having mixed their talents together to blend in Lattimore's majestic control of epithets and lines that faithfully capture both the essence and detail of the original verses, with Martin's ability to turn the entire story into something that you'd be more likely to find in books easily readable by anyone accustomed to 21st century English.A comprehensive book in itself, Homer's Iliad takes the reader through the uncharted waters of Greek life, warfare and society, poetically depicting each story, event and character in a unique and extremely descriptive manner that is known to have been attributed to all of Homer's works. However, aside from just telling the actual tales of Achilles, Hector and Ajax or Paris and Helen, the book also provides detailed explanations for anything from the most basic of lines, to descriptions of the major Greek gods mentioned throughout the writing, as well as a glossary and maps to help the reader get better acquainted with the places and the many potentially unfamiliar terms that one might encounter in this extensive read.Anyone reading the Iliad will likely have a difficult time putting it down.

  • The Iliad of Homer

    Homer, Samuel Butler

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 22, 2014)
The Iliad of Homer – Homer - Rendered into English Prose for the use of those who cannot read the original - By Samuel Butler. COMPLETE EDITION, The Iliad (sometimes referred to as the Song of Ilion or Song of Ilium) is an ancient Greek epic poem in dactylic hexameter, traditionally attributed to Homer. Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns tend to appear near the beginning. Then the epic narrative takes up events prophesied for the future, such as Achilles' looming death and the sack of Troy, prefigured and alluded to more and more vividly, so that when it reaches an end, the poem has told a more or less complete tale of the Trojan War. The Iliad is paired with something of a sequel, the Odyssey, also attributed to Homer. Along with the Odyssey, the Iliad is among the oldest extant works of Western literature, and its written version is usually dated to around the eighth century BC. Recent statistical modelling based on language evolution has found it to date to 760–710 BC. In the modern vulgate (accepted version), the Iliad contains 15,693 lines; it is written in Homeric Greek, a literary amalgam of Ionic Greek and other dialects.

The quarrel between Agamemnon and Achilles—Achilles withdraws from the war, and sends his mother Thetis to ask Jove to help the Trojans—Scene between Jove and Juno on Olympus. Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures, for so were the counsels of Jove fulfilled from the day on which the son of Atreus, king of men, and great Achilles, first fell out with one another. And which of the gods was it that set them on to quarrel? It was the son of Jove and Leto; for he was angry with the king and sent a pestilence upon the host to plague the people, because the son of Atreus had dishonoured Chryses his priest. Now Chryses had come to the ships of the Achaeans to free his daughter, and had brought with him a great ransom: moreover he bore in his hand the sceptre of Apollo wreathed with a suppliant's wreath, and he besought the Achaeans, but most of all the two sons of Atreus, who were their chiefs.
