Shipped off to an aunt and uncle on remote Rew island while their parents are moving house, Frank, Dana and Martin are bored to death in a place without computers, internet, television or even proper cell phone reception. All the locals talk about is the lobster catch. But just when our city-bred heroes decide to start boycotting their aunt's fish soup, they begin to hear stories about a strange mother and son living in Whale House, a gothic monstrosity perched on an isolated peninsula up north, and decide to investigate. Their visit turns into a nightmare as the tide rises and cuts them off from the main body of the island. Worse: they discover that Whale House conceals a terrible secret. Not only is the mother mad, but her nasty son poaches seals for fur. Frank, Dana and Martin are discovered and caught. After considerable adventures, the children manage to get through to the Coastguard on the radio. But before their rescuers can arrive, Frank, who, throughout the story, has grown in stature from a laid-back boy into a leader, overcomes his fears to tackle and subdue their captor.
