    Zane Grey

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Dec. 23, 2017)
Excerpt from The Lone Star RangerSO it was in him, then - an inherited fighting instinct, a driving intensity to kill. He was the last of the Duanes, that old fighting stock of Texas. But not the memory of his dead father, nor the pleading of his soft-voiced mother, nor the warning of this uncle who stood before him now, had brought to Buck Duane so much realization of the dark passionate strain in his blood. It was the recurrence, a hundredfold increased in power, of a strange emotion that for the last three years had arisen in him."Yes, Cal Bain's in town, full of bad whisky an' huntin' for you," repeated the elder man, gravely."It's the second time," muttered Duane, as if to himself."Son, you can't avoid a meetin'. Leave town till Cal sobers up. He ain't got it in for you when he's not drinkin'."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 19, 2015)
The Lone Star Ranger is a Western novel published by Zane Grey in 1915. It follows the life of Buck Duane, a man who becomes an outlaw and then redeems himself in the eyes of the law. Buck Duane is the son of a famous outlaw. Though an outlaw is not always a criminal, if the Rangers say he is an outlaw, its just as bad – he's a hunted man. After killing a man, Duane is forced to 'go on the dodge'. Duane turns up at an outlaw's hideout, still revolting at the idea of outlawry. Worse still, all the men he kills haunt him, for years. At the outlaw hideout, he meets a kidnapped, beautiful young woman and desires to see her free. In the second part of the book, Duane joins the Rangers, who want him to clear the frontier of outlaws, in return for the governor's pardon of his illegal deeds. Pearl Zane Grey (1872–1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that were a basis for the Western genre in literature and the arts; he idealized the American frontier. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his best-selling book. In addition to the commercial success of his printed works, they had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and television productions. As of 2012, 112 films, two television episodes, and a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, had been made that were based loosely on Grey's novels and short stories.

Post-Civil War Texas, the Lone Star state. Buck Duane is a man who was almost born holding a gun in his hand. His father was an infamous outlaw and the young child grew up witnessing scenes of violence and betrayal. When he himself inadvertently kills a man, he is forced to go into hiding and must live with the very men he despises. However, the love of a beautiful young woman is his redemption. He joins the Texas Rangers and helps to rid the state of notorious criminals, hoping to exchange this for his good name and freedom.A thumping good, old fashioned Western, from a master of the genre, published in 1915, The Lone Star Ranger by Zane Grey is a classic that shouldn't be missed by any fan. If you love tales of the lonely gun-totin' rider, carrying a burden of guilt on his young shoulders, riding through the endless badlands of the Wild West and single-handedly taking on a bunch of no-gooders, then this is indeed the book for you! Zane Grey's critics have often characterized him as a romance writer disguised as a Western writer, but that hardly detracts from the amazing depth of character and plot that he brings to his works. He also tends to give an intensity and inner life to his characters that other writers of Westerns may fail to do since they focus mainly on the plot. Most of Zane Grey's stories were adapted to film and television. More than 100 of his books were transposed to the silver screen, while several of his short stories formed the basis of longstanding television shows. Scores of famous actors and directors have cut their teeth in Zane Grey movies. He also wrote several important historical books that detailed the colorful and eventful history of the West. His own ancestors Ebenezer Zane and daughter Betty Zane were important figures in the American Revolutionary War and pioneers of the West. Zane Grey's first book was titled Betty Zane and is a riveting chronicle of the life and times of this intrepid and heroic young woman who helped to colonize this rugged land.Zane Grey was also one of the first of the millionaire best selling authors whose books were greedily lapped up by an adoring public. His readers enjoyed the mix of adventure, history, romance and action that he provided in all his works. The Lone Star Ranger is indeed a great addition to your collection of Westerns!Post-Civil War Texas, the Lone Star state. Buck Duane is a man who was almost born holding a gun in his hand. Leave town till Cal sobers up. He ain't got it in for you when he's not drinkin'.” “But what's he want me for?” demanded Duane. “To insult me again? I won't stand that twice.” “He's got a fever that's rampant in Texas these days, my boy. He wants gun-play. If he meets you he'll try to kill you.” Here it stirred in Duane again, that bursting gush of blood, like a wind of flame shaking all his inner being, and subsiding to leave him strangely chilled. “Kill me! What for?” he asked. “Lord knows there ain't any reason. But what's that to do with most of the shootin' these days? Didn't five cowboys over to Everall's kill one another dead all because they got to jerkin' at a quirt among themselves? An' Cal has no reason to love you. His girl was sweet on you.” “I quit when I found out she was his girl.” “I reckon she ain't quit. But never mind her or reasons. Cal's here, just drunk enough to be ugly.
