Hans Christian Andersen, H. P. Paull

    language (Vectura, Dec. 23, 2016)
Hans Christian Andersen often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen; April 2, 1805 – August 4, 1875 was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories—called eventyr, or "fairy-tales"—express themes that transcend age and nationality.Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Nightingale", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and many more. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films. His initial attempts at writing fairy tales were revisions of stories that he heard as a child. Andersen brought this genre to a new level by writing a vast number of fairy tales that were both bold and original. Initially they were not met with recognition, due partly to the difficulty in translating them and capturing his genius for humor and dark pathos.Contents:THE TINDER-BOXLITTLE CLAUS AND BIG CLAUSTHE REAL PRINCESSLITTLE IDA'S FLOWERSTHE NAUGHTY BOYTHE TRAVELLING COMPANIONTHE LITTLE MERMAIDTHE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHESTHE SHOES OF FORTUNETHE DAISYTHE BRAVE TIN SOLDIERTHE WILD SWANSTHE FLYING TRUNKTHE METAL PIGA ROSE FROM HOMER'S GRAVEOLE-LUK-OIE, THE DREAM-GODTHE SWINEHERDTHE NIGHTINGALETHE UGLY DUCKLINGTHE FIR TREETHE SNOW QUEENTHE DARNING-NEEDLEGRANDMOTHERTHE LEAP-FROGTHE SHEPHERDESS AND THE SHEEPHOLGER DANSKETHE LITTLE MATCH GIRLBY THE ALMSHOUSE WINDOWTHE STORY OF A MOTHERTHE OLD STREET LAMPTHE NEIGHBOURING FAMILIESTHE SHADOWTHE OLD HOUSETHE HAPPY FAMILYTHERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT ITTHE OLD GRAVE-STONETHE STORY OF THE YEARA CHEERFUL TEMPEREVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT PLACETHE GOBLIN AND THE HUCKSTERSHE WAS GOOD FOR NOTHINGTHE MONEY-BOXJACK THE DULLARDTHE THORNY ROAD OF HONORTHE BOTTLE NECKSOUP FROM A SAUSAGE SKEWERWHAT THE FIRST LITTLE MOUSE SAW AND HEARD ON HER TRAVELSWHAT THE SECOND MOUSE HAD TO TELLWHAT THE FOURTH MOUSE, WHO SPOKE BEFORE THE THIRD, HAD TO TELLHOW IT WAS PREPAREDSOMETHINGTHE LAST DREAM OF THE OLD OAKTHE RACESTHE STORY OF THE WINDTHE GIRL WHO TROD ON THE LOAFANNE LISBETHCHILDREN'S PRATTLETHE MAIL-COACH PASSENGERSTHE PEN AND THE INKSTANDTHE FARM-YARD COCK AND THE WEATHER-COCKBEAUTY OF FORM AND BEAUTY OF MINDTHE PUPPET-SHOW MANWHAT THE OLD MAN DOES IS ALWAYS RIGHTTHE SNOW MANTHE PORTUGUESE DUCKTHE BUTTERFLYTHE SNAIL AND THE ROSE-TREETHE WINDMILLTHE SILVER SHILLINGTHE BISHOP OF BORGLUM AND HIS WARRIORSTHE ELDERBUSHTHE BIRD OF POPULAR SONGOUR AUNTTHE TOADTHE RED SHOESTHE PEA BLOSSOMWHAT ONE CAN INVENTTHE SUNBEAM AND THE CAPTIVEDELAYING IS NOT FORGETTINGPOULTRY MEG'S FAMILYIN THE UTTERMOST PARTS OF THE SEAA STORY

    Hans Christian Andersen, Tiina Nunnally

Audio CD (Penguin Audio, March 24, 2005)
A gawky, dreamy boy, Hans Christian Andersen grew up to become a profoundly imaginative writer and storyteller who revolutionized literature for children. Andersen gave us the now standard versions of some traditional folk tales as well as original stories that have enchanted generations of readers. To commemorate the bicentennial of his birth, Viking will publish a new translation of thirty of his extraordinary tales, illustrated with Andersen’s own paper cuts. From the exuberant early stories such as “The Tinderbox” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes” through poignant masterpieces such as “The Little Mermaid” and “The Ugly Duckling,” to darker, more subversive later tales written for adults, the stories here are endlessly experimental, humorous and irreverent, sorrowful and strange. Tiina Nunnally’s sparkling new translation captures—for the first time in English—the vibrancy of Andersen’s voice. Compiled by Andersen’s biographer Jackie Wullschlager, who also contributes notes and a captivating introduction, this volume will be a major literary event that will dazzle readers young and old.
