  • 1,000 Mitzvahs: How Small Acts of Kindness Can Heal, Inspire, and Change Your Life

    Linda Cohen

eBook (Seal Press, Oct. 18, 2011)
When her father passed away in 2006, Linda Cohen’s busy life as a mother, wife, and entrepreneur came to a screeching halt. She took a spiritual sabbatical to work through her grief, and she came out of it resolved to embark upon a project: perform one thousand acts of kindness—mitzvahs—to honor her father’s memory.1,000 Mitzvahs shares Cohen’s two-and-a-half-year journey from sorrow to inspiration through simple daily acts of kindness. She presents each mitzvah as a short vignette, and the myriad forms they take—from helping the elderly to donating to good causes to baking and collecting food for others—highlight the many ways in which one person can touch the lives of others. As she pursues her quest, Cohen finds that her life is improved by these small acts—that every time she goes out of her way to do something good for someone else, she enhances her own well-being.More than a touching story of a daughter’s love for her father, 1,000 Mitzvahs is a testament to the transformational power of kindness, and a call to arms for those who would like to follow in Cohen’s footsteps with their own mitzvahs—no matter how large or how small.

  • Three-Ring Circus: How Real Couples Balance Marriage, Work, and Family

    Dawn Comer Jefferson, Rosanne Welch

Paperback (Seal Press, April 1, 2004)
Today’s parents are supposed to enjoy the “freedom” to have it all—high-powered careers, passionate partnerships, and brilliant, well-mannered children. That’s the spin, at least, from those who have never tried to balance the needs of bosses, spouses, and those demanding little people. Unlike guidebooks or workbooks that simply replace stress with guilt, or that offer tips most parents don’t find applicable, Three-Ring Circus offers a variety of real situations and honest stories. Parents will find comfort—and genuine solutions—in this frank collection of first-person accounts that includes married paramedics who work tag-team shifts to care for their four children, confessions of a working mom who finds the challenges of her career infinitely easier than appeasing two kids home sick from daycare, and a dad who shaped his journalism career around his children’s lives and wouldn’t have it any other way. In all, thirty moms and dads weigh in on making it all work—and knowing what to let go in the name of sanity.

  • Rubber Band Jewellery

    Pam Leach

Paperback (Search Press, Dec. 16, 2014)
Rubber band jewellery is a relative newcomer to the crafts world, and is about to make a big splash in the UK market, although it has been massive in the US for some time. Many items can be made just using a crochet hook; other more complex items are made using a special loom, which is very widely available from outlets such as Amazon, Argos and Toys R Us, for about £15. The most popular loom is the Rainbow Loom, but other makes, such as Cra-Z-Loom and Fun Loom are also available. Bags of very brightly coloured rubber bands are also easily available, together with plastic connecting clips, charms and other embellishments. In the book, there will be 20 pieces of rubber band jewellery — 10 made using just a crochet hook-like tool, and 20 using the loom — including bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings, bag charms and hand/foot accessories. Each project is accompanied by a beautiful full-colour photograph of the finished piece, clear step-by-step instructions, a list of the materials and tools needed. Two versions of each project are included, each made by following the same step-by-step instructions but by varying the colours of the rubber bands.

  • The New Better Off: Reinventing the American Dream

    Courtney E. Martin

Hardcover (Seal Press, Sept. 13, 2016)
Are we living the good life—and what defines 'good,' anyway? Americans today are constructing a completely different framework for success than their parents' generation, using new metrics that TED speaker and On Being columnist Courtney Martin has termed collectively the "New Better Off." The New Better Off puts a name to the American phenomenon of rejecting the traditional dream of a 9-to-5 job, home ownership, and a nuclear family structure—illuminating the alternate ways Americans are seeking happiness and success.Including commentary on recent changes in how we view work, customs and community, marriage, rituals, money, living arrangements, and spirituality, The New Better Off uses personal stories and social analysis to explore the trends shaping our country today. Martin covers growing topics such as freelancing, collaborative consumption, communal living, and the breaking down of gender roles. The New Better Off is about the creative choices individuals are making in their vocational and personal lives, but it’s also about the movements, formal and informal, that are coalescing around the New Better Off idea—people who are reinventing the social safety net and figuring out how to truly better their own communities.
