  • Bartlett the Turtle

Mark Hall, Emily Glaser, Will Estell, Jill Higgins

Paperback (Beach Mountain Press, Aug. 23, 2012)
Bartlett the Turtle is a great read for children who are dealing with various social issues and can benefit from the learning experience and positive outlook the character, Bartlett the Turtle, comes to realize about making new friends, acceptance of others, and the ability to accept and cope with changes that come along with growing, moving, and the modern family dynamic. Bartlett the Turtle is the first children's title to be published by author-turned-publisher, Will Estell's, southern indie publishing house, Beach Mountain Press, and holds true in the concept of Beach Mountain Press' other works in that it calls for and promotes change and positive outcomes from somewhat negative, but realistic circumstances in people and society. Author Mark Hall does a wonderful job of teaching and helping children understand the positive aspects and social issues surrounding change. The emotions and feelings felt by Bartlett the Turtle are those many preschool and adolescents will relate to, and that go along with change many children are often struggling to cope with and understand in their own world. This book can greatly increase this ability to understand and is sure to leave young readers with a clearer and more positive picture of their own circumstances. Illustrator Jill Higgins adds her great artistic ability to the unique and original watercolor illustrations of Bartlett the Turtle and his new friends, and does so in a way that will capture and hold the attention of these children. This book is a must read for children 2 to 7 and a wonderful tool for parents, teachers, therapists, and those working alongside these children. One of the best new children's books of the year, and one with a genuine benefit for the children who read, grow, and learn from it.

Forest Communities introduces young fans to the science behind the song. As the lyrics draw you through the book, natural history notes explain such topics as how trees survive fire, how soil exposed by fire provides an ideal place for seedlings to grow, and how fire releases seeds from resin-sealed pine cones. Combining songs with picture books is an engaging way to introduce young children to topics that affect their lives and the world around them.

  • Seven Steps from Snowdon to Everest: A hill walker's journey to the top of the world

    Mark Horrell

eBook (Mountain Footsteps Press, Nov. 9, 2015)
As he teetered on a narrow rock ledge a yak's bellow short of the stratosphere, with a rubber mask strapped to his face, a pair of mittens the size of a sealion's flippers, and a drop of two kilometres below him, it's fair to say Mark Horrell wasn't entirely happy with the situation he found himself in.He had been an ordinary hiker who had only read books about mountaineering. When he signed up for an organised trek in Nepal with a group of elderly ladies, little did he know that ten years later he would be attempting to climb the world's highest mountain. But as he travelled across the Himalayas, Andes, Alps and East Africa, following in the footsteps of the pioneers, he dreamed up a seven-point plan to gain the skills and experience which could turn a wild idea into reality.Funny, incisive and heartfelt, his journey provides a refreshingly honest portrait of the joys and torments of a modern-day Everest climber.Praise for Mark Horrell's other books:"This account, of his attempt to climb Everest from the North side, has elevated him and his writing to a whole new level ...
