  • The Discovery of Deduction

Shelly Johnson, Joelle Hodge, Aaron Larsen

eBook (Classical Academic Press, Dec. 20, 2012)
"Logic is the anatomy of thought."—John LockeThe Discovery of Deduction: An Introduction to Formal Logic will welcome you into the fascinating realm of formal, deductive logic. Formal logic studies how an argument is put together—the form or structure of an argument. The Discovery of Deduction is geared directly toward students as young as eighth grade, making a subject usually reserved for study in college accessible and relevant to junior–high age, logic stage students. It is intended to emphasize the practical and real-world application of soundly structured, deductive logic. Using methods such as Socratic dialogue, ample discussion, and integration of other subjects, it teaches the ways in which these dialectic students learn best. The Discovery of Deduction is recommended after a study of informal fallacies, such as The Art of Argument: An Introduction to the Informal Fallacies; however, the text stands on its own as an independent study of formal logic.
  • The Jehol Fossils: The Emergence of Feathered Dinosaurs, Beaked Birds and Flowering Plants

Mee-Mann Chang, Pei-ji Chen, Yuan Wang, Yuan-qing Wang

Hardcover (Academic Press, Feb. 22, 2008)
No other single volume reference to the Jehol site and its fossils exists and nowhere is there such a collection of fine photos of the fossils concerned. This book has pieced together the most up-to-date information on the Jehol Biota, a place that has shown the world some of the most astonishing fossil finds including the first complete skeleton of Archaeopteryx in 1861, four-winged dinosaurs- many feathered ones, the first beaked bird, the first plants with flowers and fruits, and thousands of species of invertebrates. Authors shed new light on a number of interesting theoretical issues in evolutionary biology today, such as the origin and early evolution of some major taxonomic groups. The first two chapters give an inviting introduction to the Jehol Biota in terms of its history of study, its main components, its scientific importance, its geographical, geological and biostratigraphic framework, and its renowned fossil discoveries. Each of the remaining chapters deals with a particular organismal group of the Biota written by leading experts. The book is lavishly illustrated with nearly 280 illustrations, which include 200 photographs that show the diversity of the taxa and beauty of their preservation. The colored life restorations, elegantly done by some of China's most celebrated scientific illustrators, give a kiss of life to the dead bones. Although targeted primarily at an educated public, the book is also an invaluable source of information for students and professionals in paleontology, geology, evolutionary biology and science education in general.

Paperback (Academic Press, Feb. 10, 2018)
Hydrogen Infrastructure for Energy Applications: Production, Storage, Distribution and Safety examines methodologies, new models and innovative strategies for the optimization and optimal control of the hydrogen logistic chain, with particular focus on a network of integrated facilities, sources of production, storage systems, infrastructures and the delivery process to the end users through hydrogen refueling stations. The book discusses the main motivations and criteria behind the adoption of hydrogen as an energy carrier or future fuel alternative. It presents current research in hydrogen production processes, especially from renewable energy sources, as well as storage and distribution. The book also reviews methods to model hydrogen demand uncertainties and challenges for the design of the future hydrogen supply chain. The authors go on to explore the network planning of hydrogen infrastructures, the safety and risk issues in hydrogen logistics and their future expectations. Energy engineering professionals, researchers and graduate students will find this a helpful resource to understand the methodologies used to assess the feasibility for developing hydrogen supply chains, hydrogen infrastructure and safety practices. Energy analysts and government agents can benefit from the book's detailed discussion of hydrogen energy applicability.Describes in detail the current state of the available approaches for the planning and modeling of the hydrogen infrastructure Discusses safety issues related to hydrogen in different components of its logistic chain and the methodological approach to evaluate risks that results from hydrogen accidents, including a mathematical model to assess the hazard and consequences of an accident scenario of hydrogen in pipelines Proposes a decision support system for hydrogen energy exploitation, focusing on some specific planning aspects, such as selection of locations with high hydrogen production, based mainly on the use of solar and wind energies Presents a short-term scenario of hydrogen distribution for automotive use, with a concrete, detailed, operative plan for a network of refueling service stations for the hydrogen economy

  • God's Great Covenant New Testament 2: Acts

    Claire Larsen

Perfect Paperback (Classical Academic Press, Sept. 29, 2014)
The four Gospels reveal that Jesus is the Messiah and King, God s Servant, the Son of God, and the Son of Man. The book of Acts, written by Luke, shows us that the ministry of Jesus Christ continues and even grows after His resurrection and His ascension into heaven. The book of Acts can be thought of as the acts of the apostles but also as the continuing acts of Jesus working though the apostles and the first Christians. A study of the book of Acts reveals a remarkable adventure as Jesus Christ establishes His Church by means of the apostles and early Christians, who are empowered by the Holy Spirit. God s Great Covenant, New Testament 2: Acts presents this adventure as the mission of the Church given by Jesus (unit I), guided by the Holy Spirit (unit II), and directed by the map of God s Word (unit III). As the adventure continues, students will see that the early Church had to face internal and external enemies (unit IV) and be properly equipped to spread the gospel (unit V). This book teaches students in fourth grade and up using stories, worksheets, memory verses, quizzes, and regular practical application. Students will find the book of Acts an ancient adventure that continues today and can be embodied in their own lives. This student workbook contains 32 chapters to be completed one per week in a full school year, and is divided into five themed units. A detailed Teacher s Edition is also available. It contains a full copy of the student text as well as answer keys and teacher s notes that supply additional factual information to expand upon the historical, geographical, cultural, and theological concepts introduced in the text.
