Louisa May Alcott, Anne Johnstonbrown, Audible Studios

Audiobook (Audible Studios, Jan. 28, 2014)
A country girl named Polly is visiting city friends and comes to realize that this world is quite different than which she has left. Here people are judged according to their dress and manner of speech rather than for their honesty and hard work. Yet all who meet Polly cannot help but be enamored of her; her sweet simplicity is unlike any that they have ever seen, and soon everyone comes to realize that Polly is not someone to be laughed at and ridiculed, but someone to put upon a pedestal for failing to become willing prey to the cynicism of the times.
  • An Old-Fashioned Girl

    Louisa May Alcott

    eBook (Digireads.com Publishing, March 20, 2020)
First published in 1869, “An Old-Fashioned Girl” is the charming novel of a young country girl learning to navigate sophisticated city-life by celebrated American author Louisa May Alcott. Appearing a year after the publication of her most famous work, “Little Women”, Alcott’s “An Old-Fashioned Girl” centers around the contrast between the title character, the country girl Polly Milton, and her wealthy friend from the city, Fanny Shaw. Polly goes to visit the Shaw family for the first time at age 14 and is shocked by their fancy clothes, urban lifestyle, and questionable morals. They, in turn, are amused by Polly’s simple dress and seemingly strange behavior. Before long however, the Shaw family is won over by her warmth, kindness, and wholesome values. Polly continues her visits for many years and is able to help Fanny, her brother Tom, and the rest of the Shaw family to become better people and to recognize what truly matters in life. “An Old-Fashioned Girl” is a warm-hearted and satisfying novel featuring interesting and sympathetic characters that readers both young and old will enjoy getting to know. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

  • An Old-Fashioned Girl

    Louisa May Alcott

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 19, 2017)
As the first part of "An Old-Fashioned Girl" was written in 1869, the demand for a sequel, in beseeching little letters that made refusal impossible, rendered it necessary to carry my heroine boldly forward some six or seven years into the future. The domestic nature of the story makes this audacious proceeding possible; while the lively fancies of my young readers will supply all deficiencies, and overlook all discrepancies. This explanation will, I trust, relieve those well-regulated minds, who cannot conceive of such literary lawlessness, from the bewilderment which they suffered when the same experiment was tried in a former book. "An Old-Fashioned Girl" has a beautiful glossy cover and a blank page for the dedication.
