Writer and Harvard Medical School professor Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. first emerged into the American literary limelight on this strength of his medical essays, which couched cutting-edge scientific information in informal, engaging prose. When he began writing long-form fiction, he continued this practice, creating a series of works he referred to as "medicated novels." In The Guardian Angel, a troubled young woman named Myrtle Hazard is driven to the depths of profound mental illness.

On Saturday, the 18th day of June, 1859, the "State Banner and Delphian Oracle," published weekly at Oxbow Village, one of the principal centres in a thriving river-town of New England, contained an advertisement which involved the story of a young life, and stained the emotions of a small community. Such faces of dismay, such shaking of heads, such gatherings at corners, such halts of complaining, rheumatic wagons, and dried-up, chirruping chaises, for colloquy of their still-faced tenants, had not been known since the rainy November Friday, when old Malachi Withers was found hanging in his garret up there at the lonely house behind the poplars.

A man of contrasts and contradictions, Holmes lived his life between the poetic and the realistic. A celebrated poet-doctor, he spent the greater part of his life as physician and professor at Harvard University teaching anatomy and physiology. He published many essays and journal articles on travel, epidemiology, psychology, and literature, and hundreds of short stories both humorous and critical. Along with his good friend James Russell Lowell, he was one of the founding editors of the journal Atlantic Monthly in 1857.

The digital images were cleaned and prepared for printing through automated processes. This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality.
