The Original Preface. To all Good Children in the United States. DEAR CHILDREN, I wrote this book for you to please and instruct you. I know children love to read rhymes, and sing little verses; but they often read silly rhymes, and such manner of spending their time is not good. I intended, when I began to write this book, to furnish you with a few pretty songs and poems which would teach you truths, and, I hope, induce you to love truth and goodness. Children who love their parents and their home, can soon teach their hearts to love their God and their country.
