  • Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch

    Alice Caldwell Hegan, 510 Classics

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 6, 2016)
Mrs. Wiggs' life has been anything but easy. Her husband died of alcohol, her farm burned to the ground and now she struggles in her everyday fight to "pull agin' a debt." Her five children, Jimmy, Billy and the geographically named Asia, Australia and Europena, rely on her for encouragement and love in the harshest of circumstances and she does her best to give them what they need - and so much more. Though the threat of poverty and illness lie constantly at her door, Mrs. Wiggs keeps a sunny attitude that spreads its warmth over her little family and her neighbors. Despite her lack of education, her miniscule means and the many sadnesses that plague her life, Mrs. Wiggs is an example of contentment and generosity that shines out of her tiny community and has its effect even on the wealthier citizens of the nearby town. Her plans to avoid disaster are often hilarious (especially when she approaches the local doctor and asks to sell her body for research in case she ever dies, in order to provide for her children's wellbeing!) but all show the purity and humility that live in her heart.

Mrs. Wiggs and her five children find themselves in danger of losing their shack in the cabbage patch, as they are falling behind on the mortgage and unable to get the necessary employment that they need. They are so deep in debt that they must sell the beautiful Christmas dinner that is donated to them by the local church in order to buy cheaper food supplies. Her oldest son, Jimmy, who is often the breadwinner, grows sicker and sicker until he passes away and Mrs. Wiggs turns to Lucy, the woman who brought them the Christmas dinner, for help. Time passes, and the family's hardships continue with various adventures and Lucy's helpful nature intermixed. Alice Caldwell Hegan

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 6, 2017)
Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch is a 1901 novel by American author Alice Hegan Rice, telling of a southern family's humorously coping with poverty. The book was highly popular on its release, and has been adapted to film several times. Rice was inspired to write the book during her "philanthropic work in a Louisville, Kentucky slum area, where she met an optimistic and cheerful woman" who served as the model for the book's main character. The setting of the book is a white turn-of-the-century urban slum whose inhabitants two somewhat wealthy individuals want to help. The title character is a widow with several daughters—named after the continents, because she thinks that geographical names are refined—and an employed young son, who dies before the middle of the book.
