  • English Literature for Boys and Girls

    H. E. Marshall

    eBook (anboco, Sept. 9, 2016)
Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall was a British author, particularly well known for her works of popular national history for children. She is famous for her 1905 children's history of England, Our Island Story: A History of England for Boys and Girls, illustrated by A. S. Forrest. In the USA the book was entitled An Island Story. The book was a bestseller, was printed in numerous editions, and for fifty years was the standard and much-loved book by which children learned the history of England. However a lot of this book is historically inaccurate and much of it uses Shakespeare's plays for historical sources; for example, the section of Richard III is really a summary of the play.

Paperback (Forgotten Books, March 23, 2010)
Excerpt from English Literature: For Boys and GirlsThis preface, let me begin by stating, is not meant for my proper audience Of Boys and Girls, but for the Olympians,' those semi-fairy godmothers and godfathers whose purses ought to be bottomless as their kindness is limitless. Having thus freed my pen let me proceed with my preface, in the happy consciousness that I may with impunity use five-syllabled words should I so desire. My preface is an explanation, and an apology. For every one who writes a literature for young people begins with an apology for writing it, and with an explana tion of why they wrote it. We explain that in Spite of the many excellent literatures published none exactly suits our purpose and, while apologising for adding to the number, we proceed to write one to please ourselves. My position is the same as that of all those who have gone before me, and I have no more original explanation to offer for adding yet another Literature to the many already published.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
