  • Joe's Adventures: "Fun on the River"

    Joseph J. Dougherty

eBook (Westwood Books Publishing LLC, June 15, 2018)
I did come to Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1947. My mother woke my brother and me one night and said, We are running far away from your father. He was very abusive and would beat her black and blue many times. Mom was afraid that he would kill her one day when he would come home drunk. She saved us all.To all you boys, please remember that a good man will never strike a woman or hurt her in any way! Many of these experiences are taken from my early years in Daytona and Ormond Beach. Harold is my lifelong friend. Susan is my cousin. She never had any of these experiences. I just think she is a great girl, and I wanted to include her as a main character to share in this story. Please, I do not recommend that any of my young readers try to catch snakes or alligators. These are wild things. To my older readers, what are you thinking? They are extremely dangerous and can and will kill you. Do not do it!Growing up in Florida was great. We had no air-conditioning and no TV. We had just a radio, and the mystery stories came on at night. That was our only entertainment. The movies cost nine cents, popcorn was ten cents, and sodas were five cents; and you could earn extra money by collecting cola bottles for the two-cent deposit. We only wore shoes when we went to church and school.

It all began in 1958 when I was ten. A young family had just moved into the neighborhood. One sunny summer day while I was sitting on the steps to my house, a young boy came up to me and rolled his ball to my feet. With the sun in my face I said hi and rolled it back. He ran off. A few days later he did it again. I eventually became friends with him. I told my mom that a Chinese family had moved into the neighborhood and their son, Charlie, was my new friend. She said, bring him over for supper. I did and after supper he left and my mom told me a story about people who have something called "Mongoloidism", now Down Syndrome. I became his mentor to protect him from the bullies and I got beat up more than he did. He suddenly left and I vowed that I would do something in my life that would change that bullying attitude. This book is about the sixty years since that time where I made good on my vows. It is a group of chapters that comprise the ah ha moments in my journey as a caregiver all over the world. I hope you enjoy and are enlightened by my story.

  • I Once Had a Tiger

    Anne Hunter Logue

Paperback (Westwood Books Publishing LLC, May 25, 2020)
The book is told as a story about a little girl facing her fears in the form of a tiger. The tiger has many forms and she must learn to handle the "tiger" or her fears so that she can move forward and not be afraid. Little people have many fears that they face when growing up and this story is relatable to every young child. I have asked some of the children in my life to help me illustrate the book and their expression of the tigers in their lives have lent a special significance to this book. I found as I received the illustrations that each tiger had a story and why it was relevant to the artist. I am honored to have been assisted by the originality and creativity of the children who helped me bring this book to life and I hope it helps children to process some of the fears that they experience.
