  • We Ask Only for Even-Handed Justice: Black Voices from Reconstruction, 1865-1877

    John David Smith

Hardcover (University of Massachusetts Press, July 25, 2014)
The sesquicentennial of the Civil War and Reconstruction invites reflection on the broad meaning of American democracy, including the ideals of freedom, equality, racial justice, and self-determination. In We Ask Only for Even-Handed Justice, John David Smith brings together a wealth of primary texts―editorials, letters, newspaper articles, and personal testimonies―to illuminate the experience of emancipation for the millions of African Americans enmeshed in the transition from chattel slavery to freedom from 1865 to 1877.The years following Appomattox offered the freed people numerous opportunities and challenges. Ex-slaves reconnected with relatives dispersed by the domestic slave trade and the vicissitudes of civil war. They sought their own farms and homesteads, education for their children, and legal protection from whites hostile to their new status. They negotiated labor contracts, established local communities, and, following the 1867 Reconstruction Acts, entered local, state, and national politics. Though aided by Freedmen's Bureau agents and sympathetic whites, former slaves nevertheless faced daunting odds. Ku Klux Klansmen and others terrorized blacks who asserted themselves, many northerners lost interest in their plight, and federal officials gradually left them to their own resources. As a result, former Confederates regained control of the southern state governments following the 1876 presidential election. We Ask Only for Even-Handed Justice is a substantially revised and expanded edition of a book originally published under the title Black Voices from Reconstruction, 1865–1877.

Michael and his adoptive father spend their days building boxes—special devices with mysterious abilities—that they sell to the mob at a price. They provide for each other, they look out for each other, and they'd never betray each other. But then a Super comes to town, and Michael's world is thrown into disarray. The Comet could destroy everything Michael and his dad have built, the safe and secure life they've made for themselves. And now Michael and his father face a choice: to hold tight to their life or to let it unravel.

  • A Tale by Fire: a meditative picture book

    John David Buell

Paperback (Elder Star Press, Nov. 9, 2019)
A Path to Peace and Inner PowerWelcome to A Tale by Fire, a meditative, empowering picture book for children and adults alike. It is a journey of fire and light across the ages of history - as told from the perspective of fire itself. From page to page, era to era, "fire" is defined loosely: a cityscape's glow, a rocket's exhaust, a star's light. Across the ages, it has been our tool, our weapon, and our beacon... and from a grand perspective, it tells the story of how humanity has chosen to use its power, both consciously and unconsciously, for good and for ill.Woven with hardship, healing, and hope, this strange and visionary tale gently reminds us that we are without measure... and that when we choose to share our light, we can illuminate the world. This is a BRAND NEW PAPERBACK VERSION - a slightly smaller, more intimate edition of the original hardcover book. Perfect for a classroom, a bedside, or a quiet corner.AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is a story for both children and adults (ages 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and up). However, please note that there are several childlike drawings of war throughout the book. The intention is for readers, young and old, to reflect on the responsibility that comes along with our inner power... because the next chapter of Planet Earth, for better or for worse, is ours to forge.

    John David Anderson

An action-packed, funny, and unexpected middle grade fantasy-adventure from the acclaimed author of Sidekicked. The world is not a fair place, and Colm Candorly knows it. It's just a question of how far you're willing to go to get it.In an effort to help make ends meet, Colm uses his natural gift for pickpocketing to pilfer a pile of gold from the richer residents of town, but his actions place him at the mercy of a mysterious man named Finn Argos, a gilded-toothed, smooth-tongued rogue who gives Colm a choice: he can be punished for his thievery or he can become a member of Thwodin's Legions, a guild of dungeoneers who take what they want and live as they will. Colm soon finds himself part of a family of warriors, mages, and hunters, learning to work together in a quest to survive and, perhaps, to find a bit of treasure along the way.

  • Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy: Beyond the Learning Curve

    John W. Davis

    eBook (Springer, Sept. 7, 2016)
This book addresses knowledge gaps in RARP in 3 key sections: 1) Step-by-step approach including multiple technique options and innovations, 2) Patient selection, safety, outcomes, and 3) Preparing the patient for surgery. The order is more based upon knowledge priority rather than a chronologic sequence in which part 3 would go first. Part two allows more summary and commentary on evidence and part three allows some creative content that is otherwise hard to find in one place—medical evaluations, imaging, clinical trials, patient education, etc. This textbook emphasizes content for the advanced skills surgeon in that multiple techniques are presented as well as state of the art evidence. The learning curve is addressed and the authors clarify how this text is useful for learners. The caveat is that they should be careful in patient selection and stick with what their mentors are showing them. With experience, they can then branch out into the many techniques presented here. Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy: Beyond the Learning Curve will also have cross-over appeal for surgical assistants, physician assistants, nurses, and anyone else involved in the surgical care of prostate cancer.
