    John Fitzgerald Kennedy

    Paperback (Perennial, March 15, 2000)
"This is a book about the most admirable of human virtues--courage. 'Grace under pressure,' Ernest Hemingway defined it. And these are the stories of the pressures experienced by eight United States Senators and the grace with which they endured them."-- John F. KennedyDuring 1954-55, John F. Kennedy, then a U.S. Senator, chose eight of his historical coleagues to profile for their acts of astounding integrity in the face of overwhelming opposition. These heroes include John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Thomas Hart Benson, and Robert A. Taft.Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1956, Profiles in Courage resounds with timeless lessons on themost cherished of virtues and is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. It is, as Robert Kennedy states in the foreword, "not just stories of the past but a book of hope and confidence for the future. What happens to the country, to the world, depends on what we do with what others have left us.

  • Babylon Revisited, and Other Stories

    f fitzgerald

    Hardcover (Scribner, March 15, 1960)
Written between 1920 and 1937, when F. Scott Fitzgerald was at the height of his creative powers, these ten lyric tales represent some of the author's finest fiction. In them, Fitzgerald creates vivid, timeless characters -- a dissatisfied southern belle seeking adventure in the north; the tragic hero of the title story who lost more than money in the stock market; giddy and dissipated young men and women of the interwar period. From the lazy town of Tarleton, Georgia, to the glittering cosmopolitan centers of New York and Paris, Fitzgerald brings the society of the "Lost Generation" to life in these masterfully crafted gems, showcasing the many gifts of one of our most popular writers.

  • Great Brain, the

    John D. Fitzgerald, Ron McLarty

Audio CD (Listening Library, Feb. 20, 2007)
The story is set around the turn of the century in a small rural town, where indoor plumbing is a new and exotic prospect. The story is fun because, in part, it is told from the perspective of the younger brother who idolizes his older brother, the "great brain" -- a charming conniver. Great read-aloud for 6 and up. You will have to explain things like outhouses and the fact that 10 cents a week allowance was worth working for, or that children had a lot of freedom to explore and play a hundred years ago. It's a great story with some social history mixed in. I really love this series.
  • This is me and where I am

    Joanne Fitzgerald

Board book (Fitzhenry and Whiteside, Sept. 21, 2006)
A Canadian Children's Book Centre Our Choice selection, 2005 for the Hard Cover edition and 2008 for the Board Book In the world there is a country. In that country there is a city. In that city there is a neighbourhood. In that neighbourhood there is a street. Children from preschool through grade one relish the discovery of their place in the world. Learning the number on their home, the street where they live, the town or city they call home is a comforting reminder to children that they belong. Illustrator/author Joanne Fitzgerald gradually takes her young audience from the whole wide world to one bed and the child in it. Then she turns the whole thing around: Me under the bed. Blanket on the bed. Bed in the room. Room in the house. All the way back to the world again. Governor General's Award-winning illustrator Joanne Fitzgerald brings her distinctive bright pallet and warm, cuddly characters to a charming book that will prompt young ones to look outside themselves to create their own place in the world. A wonderful support for parents with children ready to learn their address, as well as a perfect adjunct to primary school program units about a child's place in the local community and beyond. An irresistible page-turner.

  • The Great Brain Reforms

    John D. Fitzgerald, Mercer Mayer

Paperback (Dell Yearling Book, March 15, 1984)
The infamous Great Brain is home for summer vacation and ready to swindle anyone in Adenville, Utah, foolish enough to make a deal with him. The same money-hungry mind that built Tom's reputation as the Great Brain is undimmed by his year at the Academy. In one short summer Tom tricks his friends out of almost everything of value that they own, outwits three clever confidence men, and finally sets up business as a river raftsman. But when, to make 30 cents, Tom endangers the lives of two friends, his brother, J.D., decides it's time for The Great Brain to reform. And that's how the trial of the kids of Adenville vs. The Great Brain took place in the Fitzgeralds' barn one summer day.
