  • Will Somebody Please Marry My Sister?

    Eth Clifford, Ellen Eagle

Paperback (Houghton Mifflin, March 15, 1992)
Living with his family in a crowded apartment in 1920s Brooklyn, Abel Stoner dreams of having his own room and enlists the aid of everyone he knows--including the local matchmaker's daughter--to marry off his older sister. "In 1925, Abel's oldest sister Ruthie is a real oddity: a medical doctor. But even though Abel and Annie, his other sister, love Ruthie, she has become a roadblock. She stands between Abel's getting a room of his own and Annie's marrying her boyfriend--all because of their grandmother's rule that "a younger sister cannot get married before the older sister, no matter what." So Abel decides to find Ruthie a husband. With the help of pesky Hilda, whose father is a matchmaker, he locates a few good candidates, but to no avail. All's well that ends well, however, when Ruthie finds more challenging work on the other side of town. Despite the novel's interesting premise, the story never comes to life. Clifford ( Flatfoot Fox and the Case of the Missing Eye ) writes about Abel's passion for ham radios, Hilda's love of horses and their period Brooklyn setting seemingly without interest. With an eye for period details, Eagle's merry drawings portray convoluted family encounters. Ages 8-12. " ~ Publisher's Weekly

  • A Flash of Summer: A Novel

    WK Clifford

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
