Hardcover (Forgotten Books, April 22, 2018)
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Cycloid and All Forms of Cycloidal Curves, and on the Use of Such Curves It is of these curves, which are all included under the general name epicyclical curves, that I treat in the present volume, though the cycloid, epicycloid, hypocycloid, and trochoid are more fully dealt with in their geometrical aspect, than the epitrochoidal and spiral members of the epicyclic family. • Rough Ways Made Smooth: A Series of Familiar Essays on Scientific Subjects

    Richard A. Proctor

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, March 4, 2018)
Excerpt from Rough Ways Made Smooth: A Series of Familiar Essays on Scientific SubjectsIT is scarcely necessary for me to explain the plan of the present work, because I have already - in introducing my Light Science for Leisure Hours,' my Science Byways,' and my Pleasant Ways in Science - described the method on which, as I think, such treatises as the present should be written. This work deals with similar subjects in a similar way; but I think the experience I have acquired in writing other works on the same plan has enabled me to avoid some defects in the present work which I have recognised in the others. The list of subjects indicates sufficiently the range over which the present volume extends. Some of them might be judged by their names to be in no way connected with science, but it will be found that none have been treated except in their scientific significance, though in familiar and untechnical terms.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Essays on Astronomy: A Series of Papers on Planets and Meteors, the Sun and Sun-Surrounding Space, Stars and Star Cloudlets; And a Dissertation on the ... of the Life and Work of Sir John Herschel

    Richard A. Proctor

Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 4, 2015)
Excerpt from Essays on Astronomy: A Series of Papers on Planets and Meteors, the Sun and Sun-Surrounding Space, Stars and Star Cloudlets; And a Dissertation on the Approaching Transits of Venus, Preceded by Sketch of the Life and Work of Sir John HerschelI have collected into the present volume those essays to which I have had most frequently to refer in other works, and particularly in 'The Sun' and 'Other Worlds than Ours.' A certain degree of inconvenience is occasioned to readers when references are made to articles published in different serials, and still more when the reference is to essays published in the 'Proceedings' of scientific societies. It therefore seemed to me desirable to gather together these scattered papers, and, after submitting them to careful revision, to publish them in a single volume. To this course I was further encouraged by the welcome extended to my 'Light Science for Leisure Hours,' in which a series of papers covering a somewhat wider range of subjects had been similarly collected. The first three essays in the present volume (though the third is entitled, simply, The Study of Astronomy) relate to the life and work of the great astronomer and philosopher whose loss science has recently had to deplore.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
