  • Yellow Beard & The Curse of The Bloodline

    Lawrence Webster

language (Webster Publishing, Sept. 1, 2017)
KIRKUS REVIEWWebster’s (Bent Truth, 2016, etc.) horror novel tells of a phantom taking revenge for the massacre of Native American people in the American Southwest. The novel begins with a brief introduction to a furious Cherokee ghost who describes himself as “the original Boogie Man.” Yellow Beard (or “YB,” as he’s frequently called in the text) seeks vengeance, and his plan is to target the bloodlines of everyone he deems responsible for the deaths of Cherokee people, including himself and his lady love, it’s an enormous task, and this first series installment only tells a small part of the story. Over the course of the book, he hunts down and destroys seemingly unrelated victims in places all over the world, starting by slaughtering the little children of the Heidelberg family in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Halloween night. The episodic tales go to such far-flung locales as Japan’s infamous “Suicide Forest” near Mount Fuji; Beverly Hills, California; and an unnamed small town that’s east of the Mississippi River—and in each, the outcome is always the same: Yellow Beard horrifically massacres ordinary people living ordinary lives, and they never really understand the reasons why. Webster tells the many ghostly stories in a chatty, informal voice and with a straightforward sincerity, and they’re fast-paced and full of action.

  • The Princess Formerly Known as Snow White

    Peter Lawrence

Paperback (Literary Associates Press, Jan. 1, 2001)
In the great tradition of stories for all ages, Peter Lawrence retells the classic tales of The Brothers Grimm for a smart 21st Century audience. Like the stories of Mark Twain, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and James Thurber, these stories are treasured by kids who read them by themselves, by parents who read to their kids, and by grownups who love a deliciously funny story with a twist on a familiar theme. The first in the Smart Kids Studio 21st Century Grimms' series, THE PRINCESS FORMERLY KNOWN AS SNOW WHITE is a radical retelling of the Grimm Brothers' classic. It is a 21st Century fairy tale for smart kids and cool adults. The Princess Formerly Known As Snow White is a very contemporary take on Snow White, in which a vacuous male model type seeks a stereotypical, usual sort of princess. In this version, however, Snow White is anything but stereotypical. The Smart Kids account maintains the Grimm Brothers’ macabre sense of humor but presents it in a hip, laconic style. Snow White is, like the girls who read her, smart, tough, and cool. Cutting, satirical, funny and punny, The Princess Formerly Known As Snow White is a Fairy Tale for children and adults. Written by Peter Lawrence and illustrated by the incomparable Alex Nino, THE PRINCESS FORMERLY KNOWN AS SNOW WHITE is the first in the Smart Kids Studio 21st Century Grimms Series. If you love this story, be sure to read LITTLE RED: THE WOLF’S STORY, the second in the series. And watch – there will be eight more 21st Century Grimms’ published soon!
