    Robert Wilson

eBook (WestBow Press, July 16, 2015)
Treachery and romance meet on the vast sands of the Arabian Peninsula known as the Empty Quarter. But the emptiness fails to conceal the plans of Ansar al Sharia, the branch of al Qaeda in Yemen and Oman, to kill or maim major leaders of the world by using two different and subtle approaches. An old oasis area in the Rub al Khali, or Empty Quarter, becomes the headquarters from which the plan will be carried out. Doug Dean comes to Dhofar University in Salalah, Oman, to pursue his PhD dissertation on the ancient frankincense trade across the Arabian Peninsula. As he makes arrangements to move, he is recruited by the CIA. Suspicious activity is believed to be afoot between Yemen and Oman, and the CIA asks Doug to keep his eyes open while in Salalah. Then Doug meets Lila, a bright and modern Omani girl enrolled in Dhofar University to study English and America, and issues become complicated and dangerous.

  • Mathew Brady: Portraits of a Nation

    Robert Wilson

Paperback (Bloomsbury USA, Sept. 23, 2014)
Mathew Brady's attention to detail, flair for composition, and technical mastery helped establish the photograph as a thing of value. In the 1840s and '50s, “Brady of Broadway” photographed such dignitaries as Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Dolley Madison, Horace Greeley, the Prince of Wales, and Jenny Lind. But it was during the Civil War that Brady's photography became an epochal part of American history. The Civil War was the first war in history to leave a detailed photographic record, and Brady knew better than anyone the dual power of the camera to record and excite, to stop a moment in time and preserve it. More than ten thousand war images are attributed to the Brady studio. But as Wilson shows, while Brady himself accompanied the Union army to the first major battle at Bull Run, he was so shaken by the experience that throughout the rest of the war he rarely visited battlefields except well before or after a major battle, instead sending teams of photographers to the front. Mathew Brady is a gracefully written and beautifully illustrated biography of an American legend-a businessman, a suave promoter, a celebrated portrait artist, and, most important, a historian who chronicled America during the gravest moments of the nineteenth century.
  • In the Land of the Tui, 1894: My Journal in New Zealand

    Robert Wilson

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 31, 2018)
Excerpt from In the Land of the Tui, 1894: My Journal in New ZealandI have often wondered why I had neither heard nor read of the Tui before going to New Zealand, for now the thoughts suggested by its name make me ashamed to have been so ignorant. Would that I could have adequately told how this lone bird's song enraptured me! For I know, in the years to come, Memory's echo of its wild sweetness will bring back the loveliness of the forests where it has its dwelling-place, and I wish that some of its haunting cadences could be shared by those sympathetic readers who may be interested enough in that far-distant land to peruse this, I hope not too personal, record of our happy sojourn there.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
