    William Hart

The Ancient Meditation Technique that Brings Real Peace of MindVipassand-bhavand, "the development of insight," embodies the essence of the teaching of the Buddha. As taught by S. N. Goenka, this path to self-awareness is extraordinary in its simplicity, its lack of dogma and, above all, its results. Goenka--and prepared under his direct guidance--The Art of Living shows how this technique can be used to solve problems, develop unused potential, and lead a peaceful, productive life. It includes stories by S. N. Goenka, as well as answers to students' questions, that convey a vivid sense of his teaching.S. N. Goenka's Vipassana courses have attracted thousands of people of every background. Unique among teachers of meditation, Goenka is a retired industrialist and former leader of the Indian Community in Burma. Although a layman, his teaching has won the approval of senior Buddhist monks in Burma, India, and Sri Lanka, a number of whom have taken courses under his guidance. Despite his magnetism, he has no wish to be a "guru" --instead he teaches self-responsibility. This is the first systematic study of his teachings to appear in English.

  • Experimenting on a Small Planet: A History of Scientific Discoveries, a Future of Climate Change and Global Warming

    William W. Hay

    Hardcover (Springer, June 1, 2016)
This book is a thorough introduction to climate science and global change. The author is a geologist who has spent much of his life investigating the climate of Earth from a time when it was warm and dinosaurs roamed the land, to today's changing climate. Bill Hay takes you on a journey to understand how the climate system works. He explores how humans are unintentionally conducting a grand uncontrolled experiment which is leading to unanticipated changes. We follow the twisting path of seemingly unrelated discoveries in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and even mathematics to learn how they led to our present knowledge of how our planet works. He explains why the weather is becoming increasingly chaotic as our planet warms at a rate far faster than at any time in its geologic past. He speculates on possible future outcomes, and suggests that nature itself may make some unexpected course corrections. Although the book is written for the layman with little knowledge of science or mathematics, it includes information from many diverse fields to provide even those actively working in the field of climatology with a broader view of this developing drama. Experimenting on a Small Planet is a must read for anyone having more than a casual interest in global warming and climate change - one of the most important and challenging issues of our time. This new edition includes actual data from climate science into 2014. Numerous powerpoint slides allow lecturers and teachers to more effectively use the book as a basis for climate change education.
  • Tales of the Caravan, Inn, and Palace

    William Hauff

William Hauff was born in Germany in 1802 and died in 1827, barely 25 years old, but the author of several well received works, including the Fairy Tales (early fairy tales with content that is not common), novels and poems - very much in the Brothers Grimm tradition. In some he uses the device of having a continuing story, or a story from each member of a group, in one case, the Sheik's slaves. A portion is "Arabian Nights" in style - there are evil witches and enchanted dwarves who change back into handsome young men.

    William Hay

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Feb. 8, 2018)
Excerpt from An Australian Rip Van Winkle: And Other Pieces; Being a Sketch-Book After the Style of Washington IrvingLooking back, we suppose Jake was a man of quite forty. He was a beautiful rider, and carried a small stock-whip, a weapon which, like the finished swordsman of old, he would seldom use. He never varied in his dress or address. There was something soothing in his Slow voice, but some times - very seldom - his remarks were not exactly coherent. Perhaps this was owing to his solitary life - the life of his choice. Every year-we think it was every year - he would take a month's holiday, sometimes riding Off to the capital on his horse, sometimes by Coach. What he did with himself on these occasions was not quite Clear. On one of them he informed me he went to Tasmania to see the caves, but finding his bush dress and manners not suitable to some fine company in which he found himself, took careful pencil notes of the Clothing of a member of the party, purchasing exactly Similar articles as near as he could remem ber from neck-tie to hat, and restricting himself to one single ornamental cup of tea who had been used to swig from his capacious billy-can. He also, he said, Stopped himself in a habit he had of running down everything he saw, as it seemed to worry the party For the time, he would half sadly reflect, he seemed to pass comparatively well as a sort of harmless companionable joker.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
