  • A Child's Book of Saints

    William Canton

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 1, 2013)
ā€œMr. William Cantonā€™s ā€˜A Childā€™s Book of Saintsā€™ is everywhere spoken as the childrenā€™s book of the year.ā€ -The Bookman, Volumes 14-16, April, 1898 ā€œBeautiful stories exceedingly well told in poetā€™s prose.ā€ -The Spectator ā€œAs a piece of fine taste and perfect workmanship has no rival among the Christmas books of the present year. The name of Mr. Canton is a guarantee for delicate, beautiful, and original writingā€¦.A haunting touch of geniusā€¦no rival as faithful and tender records at first-hand of the child-mindā€¦A spontaneity that almost disguises the skill of the artist. In writing ā€˜A Childā€™s Book of Saints,ā€™ Mr. Canton had no common task. The beautiful stories of saints and angels have never yet been put in a fitting literary vesture, or rather, we should say, Mr. Canton is the first to provide them with a clothing of wrought gold. To take these stories and make the Catholic in the full sense, and bring them home to the hearts and imaginations of English children, it was necessary for the writer to conceive and produce a style of his own ā€“ a style in which to render them adequately Throughout this volume the writing is fascinating and musical. With all its beauty and grace, it has a certain serious depthā€¦.As English writing, a style fitted to the substance, few books are more triumphantly successful. The result is a volume for children of all ages ā€“ a pioneer work, in short, pointing to the accomplishment of a still greater task, a classical collection of the lives of the Saints.ā€ -The Sketch: A Journal of Art and Actuality, Volume 24, October, 1898 Contents IN THE FOREST OF STONE THE SONG OF THE MINSTER THE PILGRIM OF A NIGHT THE ANCIENT GODS PURSUING THE DREAM OF THE WHITE LARK THE HERMIT OF THE PILLAR KENACH'S LITTLE WOMAN GOLDEN APPLES AND ROSES RED THE SEVEN YEARS OF SEEKING THE GUARDIANS OF THE DOOR ON THE SHORES OF LONGING THE CHILDREN OF SPINALUNGA THE SIN OF THE PRINCE BISHOP THE LITTLE BEDESMAN OF CHRIST THE BURNING OF ABBOT SPIRIDION THE COUNTESS ITHA THE STORY OF THE LOST BROTHER THE KING ORGULOUS THE JOURNEY OF RHEINFRID LIGHTING THE LAMPS

  • A Child's Book of Saints

    William Canton

    Hardcover (1st World Publishing, Oct. 1, 2008)
A Child's Book of Saints was first published in 1898, when Mr. Canton had already found his audience. The book is a near successor indeed to his "W. V.: Her Book," and to "The Invisible Playmate"; and W. V. again acts as guardian elf and guide to this new region of the child's earthly paradise. The Saints are here treated with a simplicity that is almost or altogether childlike, and with an unforced imagination which is only to be learnt by becoming as a child. And this is perhaps why, although comparatively a new book, it has the air of something pleasantly old, and written long ago; and thus wins its way into the children's library of old favourite authors.

  • The Story of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary

    William Canton

Paperback (Forgotten Books, July 11, 2012)
The Shower of Roses SOME one speaks of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. A grey hill-castle rises from the mist and the snowy pines of the Thuringian forest, and a girlish figure appears on the frosty hill-track, letting fall from her apron a shower of angelic roses. She brings with her the freshness and colour of the summer dawn, and for a moment her simple sweetness illumines the confused dusky recesses of the Middle A ges. To many readers the name of St. Elizabeth means now no more than this.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings.
