  • Wayward: scifi stories & poems

    M. W. Fowler

(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 21, 2012)
M.W. Fowler's Wayward: scifi stories & poems is a wonderful collection in which young characters experience futuristic adventures. The science is low-key, but the stories are anything but in this whimsical collection featuring a boy who tries to win over his high school crush while fending off space chimps in a play, a girl who has to learn how to fly an escape pod before her world is destroyed, a gallant space knight who loves his laser pistol more than the space princess, a young cowboy who must defeat the villain arriving the next day by hovertrain, the spaceworm trying to find his perfect wormhole abode, and so many more. Throughout all of the stories and poems, Fowler rediscovers the idea of humanity's innate need to explore juxtaposed against the vastness of space and the grounding of Earth, humanity's home planet, in such a way that readers of all ages will enjoy.

  • Summer Studies of Birds and Books

    W. Warde Fowler

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 20, 2018)
Excerpt from Summer Studies of Birds and BooksIN my last eight or nine long vacations I have occasionally found time to write a lecture for a Natural History Society, or a paper for Macmillan's Magazine. The present volume - I doubt if I can justly call it a book - consists of a selection of these lectures and papers. Most of them have been in print before, but where it seemed advisable I have altered and to some extent rewritten them. All were written in the leisure of summer days (counting September as a summer month), with the exception of the first, which I have prefixed as a kind of prologue to the rest. I should add that Chapter IV. Was published last December in the form of a pamphlet by my friend Mr. Blackwell of Oxford. Chapter X. Has to do neither with birds nor books. But the subject of that little memoir was all.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The Works of Lucian of Samosata, Vol. 4 of 4: Complete With Exceptions Specified in the Preface

    H. W. Fowler

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 9, 2019)
Excerpt from The Works of Lucian of Samosata, Vol. 4 of 4: Complete With Exceptions Specified in the PrefaceA' terrible thing is ignorance, the source Of endless human woes, Spreading a mist over facts, obscuring truth, and casting a gloom upon the individual life. We are all walkers in dark ness - or say, our experience is that of blind men, knocking help-e lessly against the real, and stepping high to clear the imaginary, failing to see what is close at their feet, and in terror of being hurt by something that is leagues away. Whatever we do, we are perpetually Slipping about. This it is that has found the tragic poets a thousand themes, Labdacids, Pelopids, and all their kind. Inquiry would Show that most Of the calamities put upon the boards are arranged by ignorance as by some supernatural stage-manager. This is true enough as a gener ality; but I refer more particularly to the false reports about intimates and friends that have ruined families, razed cities, driven fathers into frenzy against their Offspring, embroiled brother with brother, children with parents, and lover with beloved. Many are the friendships that have been cut short, many the households set by the ears, because Slander has found ready credence.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
