  • The stars for Sam

    W. Maxwell Reed

Hardcover (Harcourt, Brace and Co, March 15, 1931)
The young people of today are learning about an entirely different universe from the so-called "classical" science of the days when the author went to school. The new conceptions will appear as commonplace to the coming generation as they are incredible to those of the author's generation. It has been therefore the main object of this book to start the boy and girl of today with a fair comprehension of the new conceptions of space, time, and matter. Over and over again, and from different points of view, the author has endeavored to make some of these marvelous discoveries clear. Also an effort has been made to show the relationship of one branch of physics to another, and how one law, used as a tool, can be made to formulate grand laws of primary importance.

Each one has a special goodness and special skills. When a problem is discovered the ‘Visitants’ will send one of their number across the universe to collect the appropriate ‘Good’ and once the task has been completed they are returned home again.Unlike the ‘Visitants’ who live for ever, the ‘Goods’ live only for as long as is the norm for their home planet and that is what happened to Tyred, their most experienced ‘Good’. After 200 years he passed away and as a result the ‘Visitants’ needed to find a replacement. A search of the whole universe was carried out and three names were brought forward. Josp from the Whirlwind Galaxy, Veist from the Malin Galaxy and the youngest of them all, 8 year old Helen James from planet Earth, in the Milky Way Galaxy.Helen had no idea that the future of her life was being decided far across the universe. It was only as she was sitting on the naughty step that she discovered her life was changing.Hyming, the ‘Visitant’ assigned to transport Helen, wrapped himself around her and before she knew what was happening he had taken her out of her house, up into the sky and streaking across the Milky Way. In seconds the Milky Way was far behind them. Helens biggest concern was that all hell would happen if her mother discovered she was not sat on the naughty step.Hyming reassured her that he would have her back on the step before that happened.True to his word, once Helen had sorted out the bullies in the Yunkery Star System, Hyming had her back on the step before anyone knew she had left.
