Betty Zane was a heroine of the Revolutionary War in frontier Wheeling, Virginia. In 1782 the American Indian allies of the British surrounded the Zane family with other local revolutionaries in Fort Henry. Betty volunteered to retrieve much needed gunpowder and ammunition from the Zane farmhouse.
