Mabel Howard, my little heroine, was not exactly an English girl, though she was the daughter of English parents. She was born in India, in Calcutta, where her father, Colonel Howard, was stationed for several years with his regiment. Mabel was not, I am sorry to say, a bright and blooming little maiden, though she had a sweet, intelligent face, and very endearing ways. From her birth, she had been pale, slight, and feeble. The climate was very bad for her; and, though all possible pains were taken with her health, she did not gain strength, but grew weaker and weaker. At last, when she was about nine years of age, it was resolved to send her to England, to stay with her grandparents, who lived in London. Neither her papa nor her mamma could go with her; but Katuka, her ayah, or native nurse, a kind, faithful woman, would go and stay with her always, and a friend of Colonel Howard, an officer returning home, would take charge of them both till they should reach London.

Caleb is a young boy, a personified caterpillar, who is given a chance to go to the store by himself for the first time. He is warned not to talk to our bad guy, a slug. He makes mistakes and bad decisions along the way. His world is different from ours though...It’s a place where decisions just don’t stick. You can go back, try again – but there’s one little trick. All the people affected, all have to agree. Your choices change things for others you see.Along the way he learns some valuable lessons and how his decisions, good and bad, affect the people around him.

This is a wonderful story about a world different from ours in couple fun ways. First, the characters are cute bugs and second, the mistakes, or bad choices, made by the main character can be reversed. In this way he learns from his mistakes. There is one catch though, others affected by the choice have to agree... your choices affect others you see. It is written in rhyme and is an easy read for most children 7 to 9, a challenge for early readers, and fun for all to hear. The pictures are great as well. A good lesson book where your child will know right away when a bad choice is made and see the potential consequences.

Httle offering to the great American public is my first offence in the book line for some years. It is surely not a grave offence, being composed of light letters, contributed during the last eighteen months to the New York Times. They were written irregularly and hurriedly, in brief intervals of travel, visiting, lecturing, and sight -seeing. Unfortunately a severe illness in the late summer and early autumn prevented me from giving them the careful revision they greatly needed.
