They embody some of the writer's experiences while serving his country in the "land of cotton." It is true his experiences are tame and unromantic when compared with those of some of the men of the Potomac or the Cumberland; but they are the best he can offer, and need no apology, as the style does, which is rough and unpolished.Besides giving an account of the 17th Mass. Reg't, and its participation in the engagements at Kinston, Whitehall, and Goldsboro, something is said of the other old regiments in the department, and the nine months' men,ā€”also, an account of the contrabands, their habits and dispositionā€”anecdotes, &c.

Thomas Kirwanā€™s Soldiering in North Carolina is an account of the Civil War experiences of the 17th Massachusetts, which fought extensively in North Carolina during the war. As Kirwan explains in the opening: ā€œThe contents of the following pages are presented to the public as matters of fact. • Grandpa's Airplane: An Alaska Grandpa Bush Pilot Story

    Kirk Thomas

eBook (Publication Consultants, July 1, 2008)
Whenever Kirk would fly DeHavilland Otter N6868B his adult children would say to their kids, "There goes Grandpa," as he would fly by. It wasn't long before the kids would hear an airplane and immediately look to see if it was "Grandpa's Plane." The story came about as Kirk heard accounts of his grandchildren getting excited as his airplane would fly overhead and hearing the grandkids say, "We saw you fly by today Grandpa." Constant requests for rides from the grandkids cemented the storyline.

  • The Big Ball of Light

    Thomas Kidman

language (Kidman Enterprises, March 31, 2013)
The Big Ball of Light is a childrenā€™s story about how our Solar System came into existence. It is a modern creation story as the ancient Greeks may have told it, had they known what we do about the heavens. It begins with a Big Cloud of Gas who finds he is alone in the universe so he decides to make some friends. He then meets each of the planets in the Solar System, finds out about their unique characteristics and helps them with some problems they have. Most details are based on scientific data and theories about our Solar System (although there is currently a lack of evidence supporting the idea that our planets and star can actually talk to each other). The intention of the book is to get children to learn about the Solar System in a way that (most) children learn best, through stories. Hopefully it encourages some to read further and find out what is true, what is partially true and what is outright wrong (due to some artistic license). Also, it may serve as an introduction to astronomy, giving children a starting point to work from. The book should be suitable for children who are independent readers. Alternatively, if parents are reading to their children, the book should be appropriate for ages 6 upwards. A sample of the text has been assessed to be at grade level 3, using an online writing level tester.
