  • The Loser: A Novel

    Thomas Bernhard

    Paperback (Vintage, Oct. 17, 2006)
Thomas Bernhard was one of the most original writers of the twentieth century. His formal innovation ranks with Beckett and Kafka, his outrageously cantankerous voice recalls Dostoevsky, but his gift for lacerating, lyrical, provocative prose is incomparably his own.One of Bernhard's most acclaimed novels, The Loser centers on a fictional relationship between piano virtuoso Glenn Gould and two of his fellow students who feel compelled to renounce their musical ambitions in the face of Gould's incomparable genius. One commits suicide, while the other-- the obsessive, witty, and self-mocking narrator-- has retreated into obscurity. Written as a monologue in one remarkable unbroken paragraph, The Loser is a brilliant meditation on success, failure, genius, and fame.

  • Old Masters

    Thomas Bernhard

Paperback (Penguin Classics, May 6, 2010)
Old Masters (1985) is Thomas Bernhard's devilishly funny story about the friendship between two old men. For over thirty years Reger, a music critic, has sat on the same bench in front of a Tintoretto painting in a Viennese museum, thinking and railing against contemporary society, his fellow men, artists, the weather, even the state of public lavatories. His friend Atzbacher has been summoned to meet him, and through his eyes we learn more about Reger - the tragic death of his wife, his thoughts of suicide and, eventually, the true purpose of their appointment. At once pessimistic and exuberant, rancorous and hilarious, Old Masters is a richly satirical portrait of culture, genius, nationhood, class, the value of art and the pretensions of humanity.

  • The Loser

    Thomas Bernard

Hardcover (Quartet Books, March 15, 1992)
The Loser is a novel by Thomas Bernhard, originally published in German in 1983. The Loser consists almost entirely of its (unnamed) narrator's recollections of and ruminations on his relationships with two pianist friends: one named Wertheimer, the other named Glenn Gould. Like all of Bernhard's novels since Frost (1963), The Loser is written in the form of a continuous first person interior monologue, unbroken by paragraph indentations and full of run-on sentences, obsessive repetitions, odd and unexplained uses of italics, and alienating leaps (without transition) from verb tense to verb tense.

While the latter sets out to write a book aboutGould, Wertheimer sinks deep into despair and self-destruction."Like Swift, Bernhard writes like a sacred monster. . . . A remarkableliterary performer: [he] goes to extremes in ways that vivify our senseof human possibilities, however destructive."—Richard Locke, Wall Street Journal"The excellence of Bernhard—and it is a kind virtuosity, ably maintainedin this American translation—is to make his monotonous loathing not onlysting but also, like Gould at the piano, sing."—Paul Griffiths,Times Literary Supplement"[He is] one of the century's most gifted writers."—David Plott,Philadelphia Inquirer"America has been sadly immune to the charm and challenge of Bernhard'swork and the American public has deprived itself of the deep and seriouspleasure of reading one of the great writers of this century. . . . Oneof the great works of world literature. Its arrival on these shores is asignificant literary event."—Thomas McGonigle, New York Newsday
