    Tanya Turner

    language (, May 9, 2017)
What is an anglerfish? What characteristics are common for this species of fish? The Anglerfish is a species of fish that uses an angler or a lure that works like a fishing rod. Just like when people use fishing rods (also called anglers) to catch fish, the Anglerfish is a type of fish that uses the same tactic to catch other types of fish (those that they can eat).Equipped with really big heads, Anglerfishes sometimes seem that they’re all head. Their bodies are flat – that’s why they can easily bury themselves in the sand and go unnoticed. The Anglerfish has a very big mouth – and it can open really wide, too. So wide, in fact, that the fish can easily swallow its prey (its food) in one gulp. Don’t underestimate its mouth because it can open way beyond what you would expect. As for its most important characteristic (its angler or lure), this is actually a spine that’s located at the top of its head (just above its eyes).Excited to learn more about the Anglerfish? • THE BLOBFISH Do Your Kids Know This?: A Children's Picture Book

    Tanya Turner

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 16, 2016)
Why is this fish called a Blobfish? Since blob refers to anything gooey and out of shape, this description fits the Blobfish really well. This is because this fish literally becomes a blob or a gooey mass once it’s taken out of the water. In fact, it is so out of shape and unrecognizable as a fish when it’s out of water, that it even won an award as the World’s Ugliest Animal. Can you believe that? A Blobfish measures about 2 ½ feet in its adult stage and weighs around 20 pounds. That’s almost the size and weight of a small child. As such, it is quite a big and heavy fish that a little child may find it hard to carry. The Blobfish can only be found in the deep waters of Australia and New Zealand, and even the people living in those countries may not be aware of them. Excited to learn more about the Blobfish? • THE NARWHAL Do Your Kids Know This?: A Children's Picture Book

    Tanya Turner

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 29, 2016)
Have you seen a Narwhal? Would you like to meet this magical looking creature? The Narwhal is also called Narwhale – and rightfully so, as it is indeed a species of whale. It’s a medium-sized whale, to be more specific. What makes this sea creature unique and extra special is that it has a really long tusk that makes it entirely different from other species of whales (and other sea animals, for that matter). Also, its tusk, which is similar to an elephant’s tusk, is actually a tooth. Have you ever seen a tooth as big (and as long)?Needless to say, this creature’s tusk is its main attraction. Some people see it as a sword – although that’s not an accurate description with regards to its use since the Narwhal really doesn’t use its tusk as a weapon. There is something really special about the shape and overall structure of the Narwhal’s tusk though. Their tusks were actually worth a lot of money in the past because they were sold as Unicorn’s horns. Since a Unicorn is a magical creature, their horns are thought of as magical and lucky. Moreover, because of their Unicorn-like tusk, Narwhals are also called Unicorns of the Sea – even to this very day.Excited to learn more about the Narwhal? • THE LOWLAND STREAKED TENREC Do Your Kids Know This?: A Children's Picture Book

    Tanya Turner

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 21, 2016)
What animal is a Tenrec? Isn't Tenrec a unique name for an animal? A Tenrec is a mammal that’s mostly found in the island of Madagascar. If you’ve seen the movie Madagascar, then you already know that it’s filled with many different types of animals. To date, however, the Tenrec has not made its appearance in the movie yet. The Lowland Streaked Tenrec looks like different types of animals. Even though it’s rare, you will probably find its appearance familiar. The hedgehog is a more popular type of animal – have you seen one of those? Because if you have, the Lowland Streaked Tenrec looks something like it because they both have pointed spikes all over their bodies. The Lowland Streaked Tenrec actually looks like a mouse, too – not exactly, but they do look somewhat alike (they are related, but not that close – like distant relatives, so to speak). Aside from being a unique-looking animal, you will also be amazed at this animal’s behavior. Unlike other types of animals that are solely land dwellers, water dwellers, tree dwellers, or underground dwellers, the Lowland Streaked Tenrec can be all of those things. You can find them on land, but they are not afraid of wading in shallow waters, either. While some species live in trees, there are also those that dig tunnels underground and live there. • THE PEACOCK MANTIS SHRIMP Do Your Kids Know This?: A Children's Picture Book

    Tanya Turner

    language (, May 2, 2017)
Meet the Peacock Mantis Shrimp – it’s also known as the Harlequin Mantis Shrimp, Painted Mantis Shrimp, and Clown Mantis Shrimp. While it goes by a lot of names, the Peacock Mantis Shrimp is its most popular name because it can be likened to a colorful peacock (have you seen one of those?).Of course, “harlequin,” “painted,” and “clown” also gives you an idea as to how colorful this type of shrimp is. It is more colorful than the regular shrimps that can be eaten. While they do look somewhat like the shrimps that are served in restaurants, they also look like lobsters. They don’t have claws like lobsters – but they have a pair of clubs called smashers, and their smashers make them the boxers of the sea. While the Peacock Mantis Shrimp’s “smasher” can be compared to a boxing glove, it’s much tougher than that. In fact, not only can it hit objects in a very powerful way, it is also resistant to breakage. Even when the shrimp’s smashers get cracked, they still won’t break easily. Having a really strong smasher is like having a really large hammer for breaking things. This is also one of the reasons why this type of shrimp is known to be capable of breaking glass tanks when kept as pets.Another interesting part of the Peacock Mantis Shrimp is its eyes. Their eyes look like two separate attachments on their heads – and they can move (and look) in different directions as well.Excited to learn more about the Peacock Mantis Shrimp?
