He also wrote a highly comical piece called The Dan iel Jazz. He is a wonderful reciter, and is aided by a sonorous, heaven-reaching voice. All his poems are written to be read aloud, chanted, or declaimed; in some cases they are written to be danced also, and played as games. In many of his recitations the audience is called upon to take part in choruses and refrains. Thus, in one poem, when Lindsay says, I've been to Palestine, the audience as one man has to cry back to him, What did you see in Palestine? This is rapturously enjoyed by the audience. When you have heard the poet you can well understand that he did not starve when he used to tramp in America and recite to the farmers for a meal and a night's lodging. Caring for the Swans follows the lives of Callum and Finn Cameron. The boys live in a Post Office on the Isle of Arran and have many exciting adventures on the island. Callum is an orphan who moved to join the family from an orphanage in Glasgow, and he has some very strange habits. Finn was lonely before Callum arrived, and so was willing to give his new brother a little space to grow into. Nevertheless, he needs all the patience he can find when coping with Callum, his enormous appetite and his total lack of common sense or social training.The book gets its name from Finn’s unlikely friendship with a pair of swans. Finn runs a boat-hire business for his father at the post office and often meets the swans. Then he begins to feed them. Then they mysteriously vanish. What happened to them? When Finn and Callum investigate, they get themselves into something dangerous that they soon wish they had left well alone.

This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality.
