  • Captain Bignose Knows his Ropes and all about Boats: Know your Lights

    Stephanie Jones

    language (, Nov. 30, 2017)
"Captain Bignose Knows his Ropes and all about Boats" is a series for children and blends the rules of the sea into fun filled stories. Captain Bignose, by his very name, pokes his nose into everything about boats and the children soon realise that he must be obeyed.By illustrating through disguise and a fun filled manner the use of seamanship, charts, lights, engines, compass, radio operation, life saving, flags, day signs, buoys and beacons, radar, rules of the road - showing who gives way, speeds allowed, do and don'ts. Designed to be read to children between 5 - 10 who's mum and dad want their children to slowly understand good seamanship so they can enjoy boating with their parents. The main emphasis is in the catchy stories with the seamanship aspect often at the end or near the end to explain all about boating. The complex world of the rules of the sea are covered in a series of children's stories often totally unrelated to boating but bring a point relevant to boating into each episode. Each episode is only a few pages long with "pop-up" text so parents can emphasise different points. The author is a Captain and all information is presented with maritime precision. The information on the sea and boating is the official rules. After bringing up three sons and taking them boating from as young as 4 years old I have realised that boating information needs to be "hidden" and "disguised" if they are to take any interest, so thus the aim of this series of cartoon books. The cartoons are little pictures which allow the reader to expand on each with the catchy story the prime strength of the series. Over time children will have reference stories to remind them of good seamanship which will give them a totally new field of knowledge.
