  • In the Heart of Africa

    Samuel White Baker

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 24, 2015)
In the Heart of Africa is a classic African explorer biography by Samuel White Baker. In March, 1861, I commenced an expedition to discover the sources of the Nile, with the hope of meeting the East African expedition of Captains Speke and Grant, that had been sent by the English Government from the South via Zanzibar, for the same object. I had not the presumption to publish my intention, as the sources of the Nile had hitherto defied all explorers, but I had inwardly determined to accomplish this difficult task or to die in the attempt.

  • In the Heart of Africa

    Sir Samuel White Baker

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Oct. 15, 2008)
In the Heart of Africa, by the English explorer Sir Samuel White Baker.About the AuthorSir Samuel White Baker (8 June 1821 - 30 December 1893) was an English explorer. He was born in London, and educated partly in England and partly in Germany. His father, a West India Company merchant, destined him for a commercial career, but a short experience of office work proved him to be entirely unsuited to such a life.On 3 August 1843 he married Henrietta Biddulph Martin, daughter of the rector of Maisemore, Gloucestershire. Henrietta died in 1855.During his time in Constantinople, he purportedly bought a Transylvanian girl, Barbara Maria Szasz, at a white slave auction in Vidin (now in Bulgaria). Renamed Florence, she became his second wife many years later, just before Baker returned to England for good.
