Not illustrated. 1914 Excerpt: ...afternoon. But one can always break camp in the dark, so we had to turn out very early to get in a fair day's work. We usually turned out at 4 A.m. or shortly after; an unhappy proceeding it was to turn out of our nice warm deeping bags into a pitch darkness or at beat unaympathiaing start. It took about a couple of hours to get breakfast and break camp. We made good headway till noon; then it began to snow. This freshly fallen snow made the hauling very heavy and our foothold on' the ice more difficult than ever. Things got worse and worse with us; we had to rest every few hundred yards, then every hundred, finally it would take a severe effort to move those toboggans fifty yards or less between rests. At last we could positively get no farther; we put up our tent on the top of a high bank of the river where there were a few spruce trees. The wind rose strong from the north-west increasing to a regular gale, the temperature dropped suddenly till it reached--4. There was wood enough, but in that strong wind the fire did us no good; we got tea as well as we could and turned into our sleeping-bags hoping the tent would hold, and for better times next day. In spite of the gale the tent held all right and better times came; next day was perfectly lovely, bright, cold, and clear; we hauled those toboggans nearly twenty miles and camped that afternoon on the shore opposite the East River, near the same place where We had had lunch and heard Hornby's thot more than a month before. We had intended to make another attempt to follow up this river and we did ascend it for a few miles, but evidently it ran through so much the same kind of country as the main branch cf the Dease River that we gave it up as lacking in interest: It was on this little stream that Stefannso...

  • The Book of Judges

    George C. M. Douglas

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Nov. 25, 2017)
Excerpt from The Book of JudgesThe Book of Judges gives the history of the people of God from the time that they had been settled by Joshua in the land of Canaan until the increasing disorders in the Hebrew commonwealth called for changes in the constitution, whose introduction is narrated in the Books of Samuel. The recent critical speculations which at present excite controversy are less intimately or directly concerned with this book than with most others; though the study of it must exert an influence on one's mind, and, as I think, must contribute to their decision. The materials are scanty indeed out of which to construct a reply to the questions, At what time was the book written? And, Who was its author? The mention of 'the captivity of the land,' ch. Xviii. 30, is held by some to prove that it was not composed before the Babylonian exile, or at all events before the fall of the kingdom of the Ten Tribes my own opinion is that this refers to the catastrophe in the time Of Eli, 1 Sam. Iv. 21, 22, the date being the same in the two verses, 30 and 31, viz., the end of the time that the house of God was in Shiloh. Apart from this, there is nothing said which hints at any time later than the rise of the kingdom; yet there is emphasis put on the fact of there being no king in Israel at the time that certain disorders appeared, ch. Xvii. 6, xviii. I, xix. I, xxi. 2 5 - 21 circumstance which might indicate that the hopeful feelings associated with the great revolution which introduced the kingdom were shared by the writer.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • THE HOUSE WITH THE GREEN SHUTTERS

    GEORGE DOUGLAS

    eBook (, Sept. 1, 2020)
The House with the Green Shutters is a novel by the Scottish writer George Douglas Brown (26 January 1869 – 28 August 1902), first published in 1901 by John MacQueen. Set in mid-19th century Ayrshire, in the fictitious town of Barbie which is based on his native Ochiltree, it consciously violates the conventions of the sentimental kailyard school, and is sometimes quoted as an influence on the Scottish Renaissance. The novel describes the struggles of a proud and taciturn carrier, John Gourlay, against the spiteful comments and petty machinations of the envious and idle villagers of Barbie (the "bodies"). The sudden return after fifteen years' absence of the ambitious merchant, James Wilson, son of a mole-catcher, leads to commercial competition against which Gourlay has trouble responding. After the arrival of the railway, Gourlay's position worsens and he begins to invest his hopes and money in his neurotic son, John, who cannot live up to his expectations. His scatterbrained wife and daughter live in terror of his ferocious temper and take refuge in novelettes and daydreaming.
