  • His father, or, A mother's legacy

    Silas K. 1850-1935 Hocking

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

  • Her Benny

    Silas Hocking

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, March 15, 2016)
After suffering far too much abuse at home, street urchins Benny Bates and his little sister Nelly ran away to find their fortune in the world. Despite all odds, the kindness they encounter from people like watchman Joe Ragg and the kind and loving Nelly help them both start on the path to a new life. Where that path will lead them, however, is an entirely remarkable story in and of itself, and readers will find it completely worthwhile to explore. As a man of the cloth, Silas K. Hocking had firsthand experience in dealing with the poor of Victorian Liverpool and their immense difficulties in acquiring so much as a loaf of bread, or ensuring the survival of their children. As he writes, Hocking was deeply moved mainly when he was given an opportunity to see the children of Liverpool in their own broken down homes, and be a witness to the problems they faced on a daily basis.Hocking's perception about the people and children of the streets changed entirely with these encounters, and he managed to secure several fond friendships, some of which have even inspired a few of the characters in this novel. Her Benny is Hocking's attempt to paint a different picture about Victorian Liverpool's poorest inhabitants, shedding light on the fact their strong sense of integrity and willingness to try and earn an honest and decent living. The story of Benny and Nelly is a delightful tale to read, especially if you have lost your faith in humanity, and are in need of an inspired and uplifting book to help restore it. Filled with twists and adventures, as well as seemingly coincidental but actually meaningful encounters that show evidence of a higher power playing the most important role in people's lives, Her Benny is in its essence a journey to the roots of Christianity and a strong depiction of the love for humanity that many of us have lost in this day and age.
