  • This Way to Christmas

    Ruth Sawyer

Paperback (Dodo Press, Oct. 28, 2008)
Ruth Sawyer was the professional name of Ruth Sawyer Durand (1880-1970), an American writer of children’s books. She studied folklore and storytelling at Columbia University, where she got a B. S. in 1904. Sawyer travelled to Cuba in 1900 to teach storytelling to teachers organizing kindergartens for children orphaned during the Spanish-American War. Her first published work was The Primrose Ring in 1915. Her best-known book is Roller Skates (1936). Like Roller Skates, a number of Sawyer’s books are autobiographical accounts of her childhood and reveal an interesting perspective on American life at the end of the 19th century. Sawyer also wrote non-autobiographical novels for children, such as The Enchanted Schoolhouse (1956), and a scholarly work, The Way of the Storyteller (1942). She published a number of collections of folktales. In 1965, she was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for her work. Her other works include: Doctor Danny (1918), Gladiola Murphy (1923), The Tale of the Enchanted Bunnies (1923), Picture Tales From Spain (1936), Year of Jubilo (1940) and The Year of the Christmas Dragon (1960).

  • The Way of the Storyteller

    Ruth Sawyer

    Paperback (Penguin (Non-Classics), Jan. 27, 1977)
As interest in the art of storytelling continues to grow, many books have appeared on the subject but none have matched the scope and charm of The Way of the Storyteller. First published in 1942, this classic work is unique in its blend of literary history, criticism, analysis, personal anecdote, and how-to instructions. Ruth Sawyer

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
