In this heart-warming tale of family ties, adventure and practical jokes, fun and laughter, Tom and Oliver spend their summer school holidays with their motor-bike mad grandmother and her dog Scruff in Cornwall, where they enjoy many adventures in the countryside. Brave little Scruff takes on a charging bull to save the boys. They rescue a sheep from certain death. One day, on a trip to the coast with Nanny and Scruff, they discover a wonderful magic suitcase, which enables them to travel through space and time, and even to fictional lands. Using the suitcase, the three of them travel to Ancient Rome, where they take part in a hair-raising chariot race at the Circus Maximus. The suitcase also takes them all to a land where they become living pieces in a giant game. Another time, the boys enter a land inhabited by strange, warring beings called Fusticons and Wervlings, where a little girl is caught up in one of their fierce battles and cannot get home. Tom and Oliver even get to see themselves as grown men when they travel to the future, and then foil a bank robbery with the weighty help of Nanny. Later, when they tell their Mother about their magical adventures, she does not believe them; not, that is, until she hears some news that causes her to wonder. These are just some of the adventures of Tom and Oliver, with lovable Nanny, brave little Scruff, and the magic suitcase. This is a book suitable for children aged from seven to eleven years.
