After wintering in Germany in 1797-8 he settled in the Lake District, where he wrote the 'Letter' that turned into 'Dejection: An Ode' (1802). • Samuel Taylor Coleridge Eman Poet Lib #18

    Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Paperback (Everyman Paperbacks, Jan. 15, 1997)
If the voice that is heard in the later poetry is a more labouring one, it is one that remains true to Coleridge's great themes. The role of imagination was always hard to come to terms with: sometimes it seemed to have acted as a dangerous and elusive will-o-the-wisp, sometimes it seemed to have been no less than the vision and the faculty divine. The mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding-guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create a sense of danger, the supernatural, or serenity, depending on the mood in different parts of the poem.
