By Eskimo Dog-sled and Kayak
Samuel King Hutton
eBook
This book endeavors to give an idea of Eskimo life by means of the author's travel experiences by Dr. S. K. Hutton, who was himself a part of all he saw. His readers are given a vivid picture of the hardships the author cheerfully bore, but regarding his success in evangelizing the natives there is very little said. Tells not only of adventurous journeys by boat and sledge but also "of the Eskimos as they are in their daily life, and something of the land and the homes in which they dwell. "The long, bitterly cold journeys, the hospitality of the stifling huts, the loyalty and endurance of the Eskimo drivers are well described. We shiver in sympathy with the cold, tired missionary who pushes his feet into a fine thick sleeping-bag, only to meet with an icy mass of half-frozen snow, and we almost envy the Eskimos, who, with no bed but the dogs' harness, are sleeping comfortably near by! Missionary work proper is almost confined to the last two chapters.
