Inspired by a quote in the movie Matilda (directed by Danny Devito and starring Rhea Perlman, then Embeth Davitz and Mara Wilson as Matilda and based on the book by Roald Dahl) "So Matilda's strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world, like ships onto the sea."From the movie (and book) of Matilda, Samantha was inspired to finally fulfill her dream of making children's books, so she wrote and illustrated her first book "Incredible Crab", a story about feeling alone as if no one notices us; being Good, yet feeling unappreciated. Crab eventually realizes he is in fact loved and very important when he wears a disguise (which happens to be a bottle cap for a hat and a fake mustache) and asks about whether others know of crab. When he hears of the good things others say and feel about him, he realizes that even though good things are not always spoken to him, he is in fact loved. Samantha's books are fully illustrated and written by her because she feels hand-made illustrations are more fun to look at and more thought-evoking than perfect digital images. Samantha has Autism and grew up with difficulty in understanding the emotional markers and body languages of others. As such, she often times had difficulty navigating friendships and social activities. Much of her writings are from the perspective of someone who is learning to establish these markers in hopes of helping young people who are trying to develop their own skills. Since logical thinking plays a vital role in many Autistic thought processes and the world seems more literal to the Autistic, being told rather than left to assume is important and "Incredible Crab" is a first step. Incredible Crab doesn't fully understand that he is loved, appreciated and important simply based on the fact that no one is TELLING him such, so he wonders about his status. To find out what others think, he uses a crafty method to compensate for the empty space in his awareness capabilities. OTHER BOOKS BY SAMANTHA BROWN"The Adventures of Sir Banana" is Samantha's second book and was inspired by the distorted social behaviors such as manipulation and condescension that we all face. She chose to transpire the message through healthy eating choices and that the smaller things make a big difference, like our personal choices. The story is told through the perspective of a very condescending organic banana who taunts the non-organic bananas which are subjected to a story about how the organic banana was raised and brought to market. The book is fun and uses vivid, tropical colors both as celebration and to convey good and bad manners. While Samantha's style is not traditional and she's very new to making children's books, her main goal is to speak to young people with Autism. She is currently working on a new series of children's books geared towards children with Autism and will be releasing that new series in the coming weeks of June 2015.
