  • The Material Culture of the Klamath Lake and Modoc Indians of Northeastern California and Southern Oregon

    S. A. Barrett

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Nov. 30, 2017)
Excerpt from The Material Culture of the Klamath Lake and Modoc Indians of Northeastern California and Southern OregonIn addition to the various articles of dress mentioned in speak ing of the uses of tule, the Klamath and Modoc make a belt either from the fiber of the inner bark of certain trees or from human hair. These are worn by the women in every-day dress. Plate 17, fig. 7, shows one of these belts of fiber. As a brush for dressing the hair the tail of the porcupine is used (pl. 22, fig. Usually the longer spines are removed and the skin of the tail is then stuffed either with Shredded tule or with shredded sage-brush bark. In dressing the hair the brush is drawn through it directly against the points of the spines, which, as may be seen from the illustration, lie almost flat.As before mentioned the Klamath have many vegetable foods in addition to the wokas. Most of these are derived from small plants, but the pine furnishes one. The inner bark of some of the species of pine is much esteemed as a food and there is a Special implement used in taking it. This knife-like bone imple ment (pl. 22, fig. 5) is used in separating the inner from the outer bark, and is usually made from a deer rib or from a rib of one of the other large animals.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. She makes up for it with bravery, kindness, and a brash can-do attitude.Their odd matchup is strengthened by curiosity, compassion, humor, and all the drama of typical teenage life. R. Barrett

    language (, Dec. 25, 2016)
Malcasters now rule Cartenia, through slavery, bloodshed and their ‘curse’. Occasionally, small warrior bands rise against them, letting the Malcasters know they are opposed. But they’re outnumbered. It's a hopeless situation, and they know it; for in Cartenia justice is a commodity and life, half-price.The Trealingers, Illencers and Seers all have such bands; though the Seers are unique because of their abilities, their secrets, and the fact that at one time they controlled Cartenia. Much diminished due to relentless Malcaster violence, the Seers mostly hide in their last remaining fortress Some, however, scattered among the townships, live undercover and do what they can.To say the Malcasters seek the Seer's stronghold is obvious; that they've spent years looking is a given. But when they finally track down an old woman Seer and her grandson, Javen, they keenly anticipate the culmination of their search and its inevitable conclusion -- the Seer's hidden fortress. But timing is everything, and they're just a little late. Now, the tracker seeks Javen, and he's not the only one on the boy's trail.
