It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. • My Quaker Maid 1906 Edition

    Marah Ellis Ryan

Hardcover (Rand, McNally & Co., March 15, 1906)
Marah Ellis Ryan (1860-1934) was the author of Told in the Hills, A Pagan of the Alleghanies, Squaw Elouise, In Love's Domain, Indan Love Letters and other popular novels. She lived among the Hopi for many years and wrote several novels about the Native American tribe. However, she was born in Pennsylvania and knew Quakers as friends. This novel starts with a hasty retreat from Virginia through Maryland to Pennsylvania on horseback of two young men and a "colored" boy. A sheriff runs them down when one of the men's horses goes lame. He has been told to look out for a runaway white Negro (the hateful "n" word is used by the sheriff) who could "easily pass for white in the North." Two of the party end up at the home of the Quaker maid, a very brave and resourceful young woman whose family is part of the Underground Railroad. The novel takes an unexpected turn from a conventional romance. It is about race, and the perceived taint of a "drop of Negro blood", no matter the majority of other races in your background. An unusual novel, especially for its time. There are two short novellas included in this book. Comrades is about a farm boy serving in the Northern army during the Civil War. The last story, Persephone, is especially troubling, and again about that "one drop of blood," whether there or not, just after the War's end.

  • The Woman of the Twilight, the Story of a Story

    Marah Ellis Ryan

Paperback (Forgotten Books, April 20, 2017)
Excerpt from The Woman of the Twilight, the Story of a StoryAll this from Gilman, in his short, jerky sentences as he steered the machine along the mesa from Laguna, with never a glance at the ultramarine of the sea on his right or the carpet of bloom where the range lay in great billows on his left. He prided himself on being able to write a column of live matter and con fine himself to words of one or two syllables, and that rapid fire method became a part of his own speech after he found it had a market value. Sargent listened and watched him and smiled. You and your machine are typical, Gilman, he observed; your ultimate ambition seems to be to make a record, to get somewhere; and you see and hear' nothing in your going. For the sake of your own soul, listen to that meadow-lark, and look at the wonderful color in the water by the cliff. It changes like an abalone shell in the light and holds all the shades from indigo blue to pink and a veil as of white lace ever forming and sinking, and forming again in a new pattern. Is this all so common to you that you never give it a glance?About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
