  • The Swallow: The Experiences of an American Pilot of the Lafayette Escadrille During the First World War

    Ruth Dunbar

    eBook (Leonaur, April 13, 2016)
An uncompromising anti-war view of the First World WarThis book is indisputably a novel. However, the incidents related in these pages and the character of the book's protagonist, the Texan Richard Byrd, are factual. Furthermore, the inspiration for Byrd was a member of the French Foreign Legion who became pilot in the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. So this volume is what we now call 'faction,' and because there is a dearth of material concerning the First World War in the air-to provide for the ongoing interest in the activities of the famous Lafayette Escadrille in particular-the Leonaur Editors believe it is appropriate to include it in our Aviation series so that readers can enjoy both the 'story' and the narration of real life events about a time when heroic military aviators really were 'the few.'Also available in hardcover and paperback editions.

    Hardcover (LEONAUR, Dec. 8, 2012)
An uncompromising anti-war view of the First World War This book, first published in 1919, is indisputably a novel. However, while this fact is made very clear on the title page of the original edition, it is coupled with the tantalising information that the incidents related in these pages and the character of the book's protagonist, the Texan Richard Byrd, are factual. Furthermore, the inspiration for Byrd was a member of the French Foreign Legion who became pilot in the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. So this volume is what we now call 'faction,' and because there is a dearth of material concerning the First World War in the air-to provide for the ongoing interest in the activities of the famous Lafayette Escadrille in particular-the Leonaur Editors believe it is appropriate to include it in our Aviation series so that readers can enjoy both the 'story' and the narration of real life events about a time when heroic military aviators really were 'the few.' Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
  • The Swallow a Novel

    Ruth Dunbar

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Dec. 2, 2017)
Excerpt from The Swallow a NovelWe sold every loaf for ten cents straight and sold it sealed in the first waxed paper wrappers that had ever come into El Paso. We kept the bakery white as a lily. We had started to supply only a limited demand. But as our custom grew and our machinery kept pace with it we startled our public with noodle-soup and pot-pies and other dishes through which my mother had a en joyed local fame. And every Saturday evening at six we sold pans of her hot, golden-brown bis cuits that became a sacred institution in the homes of El Paso. Soon I had to add my younger brother and my cousin to the staff. We were mak ing a good living for the four of us and turning every surplus cent back into the business. Then something happened in Europe, A gal lant rabbit stood between the hole where its babies trembled, and a band of coyotes. France and England placed themselves beside the rabbit. I waited for America to go in with France and England. America did not do it. But I for one could not go on selling ten-cent loaves in waxed paper. It was my chance, the chance of every young man in America, to adventure generously.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback (Forgotten Books, July 13, 2012)
Civil War. Had my mother been a man she, too, would have been a captain perhaps in a less bloody business. As one of that gentler, fiercer sex, however, she was the wife of a clergyman in a Texas town. But her soul came marching on. Her overcoming spirit that was my inheritance. That her spirit in me should seek satisfaction thousands of yards above the German trenches was an accident of time and invention. The Great War and the airplane only gave it direction. The spirit was always there. My one boyish ambition was to fight. My one boyish regret was that I never could see General Grant. And when airplanes came into use, all my desire crystallised into the one desire to fly.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. • The Swallow; a novel based upon the actual experiences of one of the survivors of the famous Lafayette escadrille

    Ruth Dunbar

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, Sept. 26, 2015)
About the Book Drama texts refer to the mode of fiction represented in the performance of a play in a theater, on radio or on television. Drama is viewed as a genre of poetry, with the dramatic mode being contrasted with the epic and the lyrical modes ever since Aristotle's Poetics (335 BC). The term "drama" itself derives from the Greek word meaning "action”. In the English language the word "play" or "game" was a standard term used to describe drama until William Shakespeare's time. The enactment of drama in a theater, performed by actors on a stage before an audience is often combined with music and dance. In opera, the drama is generally sung throughout, whilst in musicals it includes both spoken dialogue and songs. Also in this Book The family saga chronicles the lives of a family, or several related or interconnected families, over an extended period of time. This may be in a novel or a sequences of novels with a serious theme, and is set against the background of historical events, changes of social circumstances, or the rise and fall of fortunes. The typical family saga follows a family through several generations in a series of novels. And in this Book In historical fiction the plot is set in the past, and pays attention to the manners, social conditions and other details of the period portrayed. Some authors choose to include famous historical figures in their fictional plots, so that audiences can imagine how those individuals might have responded to the plots and environments established by the author. The Western literary component of this genre is founded in the early 19th century works of such authors as Sir Walter Scott, Honoré de Balzac, James Fenimore Cooper, and Leo Tolstoy.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades.
